My heart skips a beat and I can’t believe the words he just gave me so I make sure I understand him correctly. “So, we have an agreement?”

“We do. But it’ll happen on my terms,” he fires back.

“That depends. We’re not waiting half a decade to get to the actual act of being together, right?”

“My terms, Mona. No negotiations. I’m taking point and will go as slow as the both of us need for this to happen.”

I grab a cloth and dry my hands now that I’m done with the dishes. “You and I, no one else: we’re in this together.”

This whole concept should scare the shit out of me but this is a man I’ve texted with for months, is a good friend of Medley’s old man, and the one I just spent the night sleeping against for the first freaking time since it happened and I didn’t wake up screaming. I’d say my body and mind subconsciously feel safe with him.

I have no choice. I want to move on and I am attracted to him. Besides the fact, this man is insanely hot. He’s funny, smart, maybe kicked in the balls by life in another way as I was but we both have our mental scars. It feels right. He felt right when his lips were on mine,my mind agrees along with my body.

“You and I, exclusive. We’ll go grab your things right now,” he says and steps away from the counter.

“What?” I squeak, wondering what he means by this.

The man shrugs. “We have a lot of work to do if we want to break through both our issues. Staying close is a necessity and you already spent the night with me so we’re breaking ground on that issue as well.”

I have no reply because he’s right.

“What exactly are your issues? I mean, besides not having sex in years. If it’s the pregnancy angle with the condom tearing and lack of communication and difference of opinion when it comes to kids, I completely understand.” Wow, brain that was quite the run-on sentence. I take another breath and might as well throw out some other crucial details about myself. “I can also ensure you I’m clean and on the pill and currently am not taking any antibiotics so the birth control should be working. As you know I was pregnant. I was also confronted by something I wasn’t expecting. And sadly enough, I made the decision to step up for whatever hand I was dealt with and started to accept the pregnancy but then life took the choice away from me. I never thought about kids in my future but now I know I would like to have a family at some point in my life and we both know you can plan many things but living is like the weather: it can change on you when you least expect it and can only roughly outline a short time ahead.”

“So we’re fucking bare,” Perry rumbles and I can only gape at the man.

“That’s your four word reply to my carefully worded ramblings about your issues and my opinion about it?”

“I gathered from those words you completely understand so we’re on the same page.” Perry shrugs. “Hence me cutting to the chase.”

“Well.” I hold my arms away from my body and sarcastically say, “Let’s get naked then.”

The doorbell rings and Perry tells me with a sly grin spreading across his face, “Hold that thought.”

He jogs out of the room and I follow behind him to see Cassia standing on the porch when he opens the front door.

“Yo, heads up, the new sheriff is coming over and–”

I glance over her shoulder and cut her off. “He’s already here and parking right behind your bike. What’s going on?”

“It’s about Henrick. Come on, let’s go inside and talk so we can keep the sheriff outside,” Cassia says.

“Let’s not,” the sheriff rumbles from behind her.

Cassia whirls around. “Go suck your thumb for a few minutes while I talk to my sister.”

“Not your sister by blood so, in my opinion you’re obstructing justice and I can arrest your lush ass.”

“My lush,” Cassia growls and I can see her hand curl into a fist; ready to punch the new sheriff in the face.

I reach out and grab her wrist to pull her inside. “Okay, let’s be reasonable here. Why don’t we all get inside and Perry will make some more coffee so we can all sit down and have a normal conversation.”

“Sounds to me like we’re not the only ones who need therapeutic sex,” Perry mutters as I stroll past him.

I have to repress my laughter but the way Cassia and the sheriff are eyeing one another I’d say something is indeed brewing between those two. We all take a seat and by the time we have a steaming cup of coffee in front of us, I’m ready to hear why the sheriff is here.

He clears his throat. “You might be aware of the fact I’m in close contact with Atticus concerning your case.”

I give a nod because Atticus has reached out a couple of times over the past few months to let me know I have nothing to worry about when it comes to Henrick. He’s in jail and awaiting trial. There’s a load of evidence and he’s not just going down for what he did to me but also for being responsible for the deaths of both the deputy as well as the former sheriff of this town.
