“I think the bitch was fed up with subtlety and therefore ran someone that wasn’t Ramona but a part of her MC off the road. She has nothing to lose. Her face is plastered all over the state, no money that we are aware of, she clearly stole a truck, and doesn’t have a place to stay.”

“Exactly how her screwed-up husband was when he ran over the last sheriff of this town,” Ramona mutters and then winces. “Sorry. I hope she doesn’t run you over but come on…it’s insanity on overdrive when you think about it. Your odds aren’t the very best either wouldn’t you say?”

Calvin rubs the back of his neck, a frustrated sigh rips from him before he grumbles, “Hence me calling in reinforcements. Atticus is on his way with some of the brothers and those who are staying behind are already working the case. Everyone is on top of this to get her arrested.”

Ramona gasps and snaps, “Did anyone check in on how Cassia is doing? It’s been hours and she’s all alone with Kai.”

Calvin chuckles, pulls his phone from his pocket and holds it out for us to see. “Ivar gave me her number and we’ve texted a few times back and forth. I offered to let the nanny I usually call to come pick him up but she says she’s got it under control. The last message I received was a photograph of Kai eating spaghetti with the sentence, ‘See? Still alive.’ I’m not worried, unless she can’t cook and is trying to poison my kid.”

“Cassia’s spaghetti is insanely delicious,” Hudsyn assures him. “If anything, she’s getting him addicted to the best spaghetti ever.”

Ramona glances my way. “And don’t worry about the kitchen, it’ll be spotless as soon as they’re done eating. I’m sure she’s going to push a cloth in Kai’s hands to make him help.”

“Like I said, I’m not worried,” Calvin states with a hint of a smile on his face but his features slide back to stone when he adds, “I am concerned about the rest of you girls.”

Hudsyn waves him off. “For now, we’re staying right here. I’m sure Atticus will show up soon enough and we’ll discuss an escort back to the clubhouse.”

“We’re going back to my place. I can’t leave the horses unattended.” I realize I’ve spoken for the both of us without discussing anything with Ramona. “Unless you want to stay at the clubhouse.”

“I’m with Perry. I go wherever he goes,” she simply replies and I don’t care if she’s agreeing to stay with me because hearing her say those words brings out a truckload of different feelings.

I dare say I haven’t felt such feelings rise inside me this fierce. What I might have thought was some form of love for my wife must have been a fragment from what this woman does to me.

Maybe it’s due to a deeper connection, maybe because I’m older and have been through a load of shit; whatever it is I know for a fact Ramona is the one woman who has a hold of me like no other.

I lean in and brush my lips against hers and murmur, “Yes, you are.”

“Third one who falls, I wonder who’s next,” Hudsyn quips.

Ramona pulls back and I wait for a hint of panic to slip into her features. The time we’ve spent together she’s had her moments where–in my opinion–she starts to overthink and therefore panics as soon as things get too real, too fast.

But there is no panic, if anything I’d say she’s vibrating determination. Leaning forward she plants a hard kiss on my mouth and chuckles as she says, “Don’t look so shocked. If there’s anyone walking this screwed-up earth that makes me feel safe, it’s you.”

“Good,” I tell her with determination. And since I have her attention, along with her admittance, I might as well throw my feelings out there. “Because I’m not letting you walk away.”

She places a finger against my mouth, preventing me from voicing the very words that are now tumbling over her lips. “You’re mine.”

“That’s a claim,” Hudsyn quips. “Finally, something positive in all the negative hitting us the past few months.”

The doctor steps into the waiting room and I stay somewhat back to let the women have all the room as the doc starts to explain how Sonnet is doing. I listen closely and from what I’m hearing Sonnet is very lucky to be alive.

The surgery to fix the complicated fracture of her left femur was successful, but it will take about four to six months to heal completely. Not to mention, months of physical therapy to restore the damage.

Her left arm was also broken and put in a cast and she has a severe concussion. For now, she needs to rest and there are only two people allowed to visit. Hudsyn and Ramona are the ones who go in first and the rest of us stay in the waiting room.

Forty minutes later, Calvin strolls back into the waiting room. He left when Hudsyn and Ramona visited Sonnet, needing to make a few calls. He comes to a stop in front of me, Ivar, and Ezra but slightly turns when he notices Ramona and Hudsyn walking back into the room.

Ramona slips to my side and I hate seeing the dark circles underneath her eyes. I wrap my arm around her and pull her close.

“Good, you’re all here,” Calvin grunts. “Backup has arrived and we have a few squad cars downstairs that will escort you home. Sonnet needs the rest and she’s safer with a deputy in front of her room while the rest of you will stay safely inside as well.”

“Do you think–” Hudsyn starts but is cut off by a high-pitched war cry.

“Die you fucking bitch. All of you. He was mine and now you’re going to pay for touching something you shouldn’t have,” Alma seethes and I see the flash of a gun before the sound of bullets cuts through the air.

Instinct kicks in and I can barely turn us around and take Ramona down with me. I cover her body with mine and feel the burn of a bullet grazing my skin. There’s screaming, more bullets are being fired, until seconds later silence overtakes the room.

I glance around and notice Calvin is striding to Alma with his gun aimed at her lifeless body that’s draped over the floor while a pool of crimson is starting to spread from underneath her. He gently places his boot on the gun and slides it across the floor to make sure it’s further away from her hand.
