Both Ivar and Perry stroll my way.

“Did Calvin need to head into work? I know he was on call but–” Perry starts but I cut him off.

“A biker was run off the road, he’s heading to the scene of the accident right now.” Emotions are tearing at me when I add on a whisper, “Sonnet just left moments before he received the call.”

“Fuck,” Ivar snaps and grabs his phone and starts to rattle off the words, “Sonnet was on her way home but the sheriff was just called to a scene involving a biker that was run off the road. Fuck. Yeah. Okay. Keep us posted.” He hangs up and the way his face goes soft when he looks at me, I know it’s about Sonnet. “That was Medley. Sonnet was pushed off the road by a truck and it happened before their eyes because they were just moving the Longhorns into the pasture right next to the road. Hudsyn is in the ambulance with Sonnet but she was still unconscious when they drove way.”

“What’s going on?” Cassia questions as she brings Melody to a stop right next to us.

I glance at the little boy sitting high on the horse and I let my hand slide over Melody’s neck.

Taking the reins from Cassia, I tell her, “Why don’t I walk Melody around for a bit? Ivar will fill you in.”

I watch from a distance and I expect Cassia to rush off to get to either the ranch or the hospital but instead she walks right at me.

“I’ll watch over him,” she softly tells me. “You can go with Perry and Ivar and I’ll stay here. I’m guessing Calvin asked you to look after his son, right?”

“Yes.” I stare at the little man for a breath or two before I turn to Cassia and ask, “Are you sure?”

Cassia snorts. “We’ll be fine. Right, Kai? We’re going to have a great time together till your father comes back, aren’t we?”

Kai nods furiously.

“See?” Cassia quips. “I’ll walk him around some more and is it okay if I put Melody in the pasture on the left of the ranch? I mean, if it takes too long I should feed the kid. I’m hungry right now. Are you?”

The boy nods once more.

“If you rather put Melody in a stall, there’s an empty one in the back of the stable,” I offer.

“Perfect.” Cassia guides her horse away from me and I turn to walk back to Perry and Ivar.

“I assume we’re heading for the hospital?” Perry asks.

“Yes, Cassia will stay here to watch over Kai until Calvin returns.” I sigh and fall in step behind Perry who is stalking toward the truck.

We all get inside and it’s the longest drive, in silence, to the hospital. My mind is all over the place as to why this happened and if she’s going to be okay. But all we can do is wait once we arrive at the hospital and are entering the waiting room where Hudsyn is sitting by herself.

The look on her face is utter sadness and I hope Sonnet’s still alive.

CHAPTER SIX

– PERRY –

I gently shake Ramona awake. “Hey, darlin’. The sheriff’s here.”

She jolts upright and lets her gaze bounce wildly around the room. I give her hand a gentle squeeze and her eyes find mine.

“As far as I know, Sonnet is still in surgery to fix her leg, but I’m guessing Calvin is here to give us an update about the accident,” I tell her.

“It wasn’t a damn accident,” Ramona mutters as she moves her head from left to right, gently stretching her muscles.

Calvin stalks toward us. “Hey, the nurse just told me Sonnet has pulled through surgery and the doc is on his way to give an update.”

“Oh, thank fuck,” Hudsyn, who is sitting next to us, mutters.

“About the truck that drove her off the road? It was reported stolen four days ago.” Calvin lowers his voice. “It’s a little too much of a coincidence if you ask me. With Alma going on the run, one of yours being hurt right in front of you. Hell, even the description Medley gave fits the bill. I’ve called in reinforcements because we found the truck a few miles out of town, still burning so any evidence is lost. It’s safe to say I want all of you to stay at home and I’ll put a few men in patrol cars–”

“Shouldn’t we go for subtlety? Maybe the bitch will stroll right inside and you can shoot her in the head to end all of this,” Hudsyn snaps.
