“Elvira,” I snap. “Get in your car and crawl back underneath the rock you’ve been living under these past four years. I don’t want you here and neither does my son.”

“Calvin, please. Let’s be reasonable and sit down for a civil conversation. The both of us have grown so much over the years and a lot has happened. Can we at least talk? For old time’s sake?” she pleads and flutters her eyelashes as if dust hit her in the face and it’s burning her eye.

For the life of me I can’t think why women do that shit. Batting eyes. It’s not sexy at all. And seriously, for old time’s sake? I woke up almost five years ago with a hangover from a club party, only to find her riding my bare cock. I felt dirty and used and can’t even remember hooking up with her–which till this day I still think she deliberately picked me to get pregnant but that’s a whole different story.

I turn my attention to Cassia and grunt, “Go inside.”

The way her face washes over with anger I half expect her to snarl at me but instead she steps back and softly closes the door.

“Thank you, Calvin. I knew you would give me another shot,” Elvira purrs.

“Yeah, right,” I sarcastically tell her. “In your nightmares with a gun in my hand so I don’t miss giving you another shot right in the fucking head. Get the fuck off my property and never come back. You had your shot and you damn well blew it when you didn’t want your own flesh and blood because money is what makes your world go round. I don’t care if you grew a few brain cells over the years or had second thoughts. Our history is what it is: history. The past. Now get in your car and keep driving till you hit la-la-land where you reside or I’ll arrest your ass and throw you in jail for trespassing.”

Her head slowly turns beet-red. She huffs and stomps toward the car while she calls me every name in the book.

Elvira gets in her car, rolls down the window, and screeches, “This isn’t over.”

I flip her off and take the spare key from my pocket, the one I always keep inside the desk in my office in case of emergencies. Like today when I had to give my key chain to Cassia so she could bring Kai home. I let the door fall shut behind me and lean against it, releasing a deep sigh.

A delicious scent hits me and draws me into the kitchen where I find Cassia removing a tray of oatmeal cookies from the oven. This. This is what I pictured when I thought about family life. A gorgeous woman taking pleasure in baking delicious shit while we raise our kids together. My old lady who holds my heart and spikes lust at every turn, earning my respect by being the woman she is.

Her gaze dances between her task at hand and the baby monitor sitting on the counter. A few months ago–when I saw her for the first time–I knew she was a sight to behold with her hair down to her ass, along with a tantalizing sway of her hips. Then she turned and opened that smart, sharp mouth of hers and I wanted nothing more than to make her submit to me.

But I can’t because I have to think about Kai and the new life we were starting in this town. My life is hectic enough with being the sheriff and also a single dad, adding a new woman into the mix stirs up shit that might go wrong and adds to the complications.

Not to mention, the history I’ve endured with Elvira doesn’t give me a healthy state of mind when it comes to trusting women. Though I know deep down Cassia is loyal to the bone. I’ve seen it with my own damn eyes and still I chose to push her away.

Seeing her stand up for my son and holding her ground was the wake-up call I needed. Though cuffing her this afternoon and having her still offer to take care of my kid while I fucked her over was the first mental push to make her mine. All of it shows I shouldn’t walk away from her. I tried but it’s inevitable; we’re already colliding at every turn so we might as well go supernova and burn the sheets while we’re at it.

“Aren’t you going to fire question after question at me?” I ask to get her attention.

I know she noticed me standing in the kitchen but she’s set to ignore me while she finishes cleaning the stuff she used to bake the delicious smelling cookies.

“Not my business,” she mutters and places the cloth she used to wipe the kitchen counter near the sink. “Okay, since you’re home, I’m good to go. Oh, how do you want to handle the arrest? Need me to swing by tomorrow morning? Or you can shoot me a message and we’ll get things set. Whatever. Just let me know if Kai is feeling better when he wakes up, would you? Otherwise, I’ll worry and have to bug Ezra, Ivar, or Perry to contact you to ask how he’s doing.”

She’s set to brush past me but I grab her wrist to hold her in place. “Stay.”

Her gaze drops to where my fingers are pressed tight against her skin. I can see her pupils dilate and I know she feels the sharp connection between us. It’s a primal awareness, one where I know it will be unlike anything I’ve experienced with other women.

Hell, if she triggers every cell in my body to stand to attention the way my body reacts when I’m merely around her…what’s going to happen if I kiss the fuck out of her or bury myself to the hilt inside her? Right.

Mind and cum blown. I just know it.

“I should go. My sisters.” She shifts on her feet and I know she wants to rip away from my grip but something is stopping her. “The club planned a surprise birthday party.”

“Which I’m sure you canceled since you were looking after my boy,” I boldly challenge, feeling selfish after having a shitty day and finding Elvira on my damn doorstep on top of it. “Let me order some food for us so I can make it up to you.”

One of her well-groomed eyebrows heads toward the ceiling. “Make what up to me exactly? Because the list you have to make up for is long.”

“Fuck,” I mutter and chuckle.

The corner of her mouth twitches. “So, you can laugh?” she challenges.

I know what she means. I don’t show emotions to outsiders. Do I laugh with my son while we’re alone or around the house? Hell, yes. On the job or around town? Nope. Shit is always serious and my focus is on full alert.

“Will you stay?” I question.

The baby monitor crackles and our gaze goes to it and we both watch Kai rubbing his eyes.
