“You should go check,” she softly tells me.

I don’t answer or ask her to come with me for that matter but instead I pull her toward the stairs. She silently follows and when we get to Kai’s room we find my boy back asleep. I reach over to hold the back of my palm against his forehead but Cassia is already aiming the device to check his temperature.

She holds it out for me to see Kai doesn’t have a fever and I carefully tuck him back underneath the covers he kicked off. We sneak our way out of the room and head downstairs. Once we’re back in the kitchen I can tell Cassia is ready to bolt.

I shoot my arm out and place my hand on the counter to block her exit. “I’d like to make a deal.”

She slowly tilts her head to the side. “I don’t think I want to hear this.” A deep sigh flows from her and eventually she grumbles, “What kind of deal?”

“I need someone I trust to watch over Kai from now on.”

“You already have a nanny,” she fires back.

I manage to swallow back my frustration and decide I might as well fully commit to the woman in front of me. This means she’s going to hear exactly what I think about her–what I’ve been holding back–and I have no clue how she’s going to take it. But I guess I’m out of options since Elvira showed her face, on my damn porch for fuck’s sake.

“I don’t need a nanny. I need you. Someone who bleeds loyalty and isn’t afraid to go head-to-head when danger is thrown her way. You were raised in the same world I came from and know the options and limitations. It’s not just you anyone is dealing with but a sisterhood has your back. The way you faced Elvira like a momma bear blocking the exit of her cave to protect the cub inside made me aware how perfect you are for us. You didn’t even know our situation and you handled it perfectly. If I had the nanny here, Elvira would be sipping tea with her and fuck…maybe messing with Kai or taking him with her.”

I rub the back of my neck, feeling a headache coming on and take a few steps to the left to take a seat on one of the kitchen chairs. Putting my forearms on my knees, I hang my head to brace myself for explaining my past.

I hear Cassia roam around the kitchen and when she places a plate in front of me, she says, “Here, have a cookie. Do you want some tea, coffee, or milk to go with it?”

“Milk. Cold. Warm milk is gross,” I reply.

Cassia chuckles. “Ain’t that the truth. The only time milk is good hot is in a latte.”

I hold her stare and tell her, “Like I said, my kind of woman.”

She rolls her eyes and stalks to the refrigerator, takes out the milk and strolls back to the table with two glasses in her hand.

“Okay, start talking. But I’m telling you up front: I’m not making any promises.”

I’ve just took a bite from the cookie she baked and I couldn’t muster a reply if I wanted to. I’m way too captivated by the taste of these oatmeal raisin cookies. I’ve never tasted anything like it. I know she must have made them with Kai in mind but the little dude hates raisins.

Like fuck am I going to tell her though. And this deal I’m offering might be with Kai in mind but I’m selfish enough to acknowledge it’s for me as well.

CHAPTER THREE

– CASSIA –

“I don’t have to explain the biker life and some of the parties,” he starts and I have to roll my eyes again at the man.

“Right,” he chuckles and it slides over my skin as if he would brush a feather against me.

What’s wrong with this man? Flipping his mood like a coin in the air. He always has this stony look and now I’ve seen him grin at me when I confronted the mother of his child, and on top of it he’s now chuckling? Weird for sure.

“Well, let’s just say I indulged. And to make a long story short, one morning after a party at the clubhouse I woke up with a chick riding my cock bare. I shot my load and it’s why Kai is walking this earth. I still don’t understand how it happened or how she got inside my room. I’m almost positive I didn’t hook up with her the night before either. Anyway, she showed up at the clubhouse weeks later telling me she was pregnant and would do a paternity test and all that shit. I had a background check done to screen her and we found out she needed to get married, settle down to be able to get her trust fund. She thought this was the easiest way to get herself knocked up.”

I blink a few times and stare at the man to process what he just shared while he chews on a cookie.

Seems he’s not done yet and continues. “Turns out, daddy wasn’t amused to find out she got herself knocked up to get the cash from him and didn’t want a biker as his son-in-law. Not that I’d marry the bitch. Fucking tricking me and expecting a ring on her finger on top of it? Fuck that. Anyway. Her father had a line or two added in the trust fund papers, a failsafe so to say. Marriage was one angle, create offspring within two years, and the husband needed to have a respectable job with a clear record. Her father would have to approve. If he wasn’t alive, her mother would have to approve of the future son-in-law.”

I shake my head. “What a weird thing to force onto your kids. Hanging the money angle over their heads in return for settling down and having a family. Why not simply tell them to find a job or hook a certain age to it? Ugh. Wait. How old was she when she got pregnant with Kai?”

“Twenty-one. And the fucker didn’t link an age to the trust fund but she needed to reach his demands so the fucker was ensured his family would live on since she was an only kid who rebelled all her life stating she never wanted kids. I did a full background check on the whole family the second she showed up stating she was pregnant with my kid. I’ve also read the terms of the trust fund: it says she has to have a son and give him her father’s first name as well. She did fulfill that part of the contract but clearly her father didn’t approve of me and she tried like hell to persuade me to marry her and her father to fucking like me. After the paternity test stated Kai was mine, I told her I’d be there for the kid but no marriage. If I ever marry it would be because I want the woman to be mine in every way and I never wanted her.”

“What a mess,” I muse and suddenly it clicks why she isn’t in Kai’s life. “Fucking hell, are you trying to tell me she dropped the kid in your lap and tried to be successful with some other dude to meet the terms and get her hands on the trust fund?”

Calvin shrugs. “She saw me change the first few diapers and handle the midnight feedings. She cried how she wasn’t fit to be a mother and never wanted it. Need I mention she kept calling the baby an it and wanted to get rid of Kai since he only came into this world because she wanted her money. I told her I could make it all go away. Offer her a chance to start over and went to a judge and put things into high speed so she could give up her parental rights.”
