I nod in understanding. “With your connections and being a Cowboy Biker MC Lawmen you were able to pull the necessary strings.”

“I never regret doing what needed to be done. I have all the papers in order and she has no say about Kai whatsoever. But her showing up out of nowhere? I have no clue what her agenda is and I’m not liking it one damn bit. Hell, I explained to Kai about his mother when he started asking questions. He knows he has a mother who is still alive. And I couldn’t get the actual reasons over my damn lips so I simply danced around it and said she moved away to start a life somewhere else because she only gave birth to give me a son.”

My heart swells for this man. I want to gush, “Awwww, that’s so sweet.” But the reality of it all is devastating. How can such a sweet boy be thrown into the world by a mother who only has a cash prize in mind for the win?

“Can she try to worm her way back into your lives? Like for visitation rights or something?” I question.

Calvin gives a curt shake of his head. “She gave up her rights, so no visitation or so much as talking to Kai.”

“You should call your old president and get them to turn her life inside out again, see what she’s been up to all these years,” I suggest.

He takes his phone from his pocket and jabs at the screen before he places the device next to his ear. “Atticus. Elvira was standing on my doorstep when I got home.” Calvin falls silent and I imagine he’s listening to Atticus taking over the conversation. “Thanks, appreciate it.” His eyes collide with mine. “No. Cassia was blocking the door, she handled her.” A short chuckle rings out before he adds, “Don’t I know it. I’ll give her some time to get used to the idea, but it will happen. Yeah. Okay. Talk later. Thanks, man.”

“Oooookay.” I wave my finger in his direction. “What was the whole ‘I will give her some time to get used to the idea but it will happen,’ statement?”

“My old prez thinks you’re perfect for me but I already knew you were the second I met you,” the man easily says and I can feel my jaw hitting the table.

“Are you insane?” I squeak. “You don’t even like me. You’ve been an asshole for as long as you’ve known me and now you suddenly decide I’m perfect for you? No. Nu-uh. Not happening. The thing with your crazy as fuck birthmother of your kid shit? I’m going to do everything I can to be there for Kai and help in any way, as will my club. But you and I? No way in hell. Need I remind you how we started off today? Me in cuffs. It’s my fucking birthday you asshole and I haven’t had a piece of damn pie to celebrate or had someone sing happy birthday to me.”

I fall silent when I hear the sound of little feet coming near. Shit. We were so wrapped up in conversation we didn’t keep an eye on the baby monitor.

“Hey, Captain. Are you doing better?” Calvin quips.

Kai softly shakes his head and is still looking a bit pale when he asks, “Can I have some water?”

I’m already on my feet and grabbing a glass out of the cupboard and pour some water for him. “Here you go, sweets.”

“You’re still here,” he croaks and starts to gulp the water down.

I place a hand on his. “Small sips. You have to take it easy on your stomach.”

“Cassia is right,” Calvin says as he picks him up and places his son on his lap. “You have a stomach bug and it’s best to take it easy and rest as much as possible.”

Kai’s eyes slide to me. “Are you going to stay and be there when I wake up?”

Fuck.

“Yeah, she’s not going anywhere,” Calvin states and I want to shoot him a glare but I’m prevented from doing so when he lifts Kai up and starts to carry him back to bed.

I should hightail it out of the house but how can I when Calvin just promised his sick kid I’d be here when he wakes up? How freaking mean and a complete guilt trip he’s laying on me. Ugh. I can’t leave. Releasing a deep sigh, I keep my ass on the chair until Calvin comes stalking back into the kitchen around fifteen minutes later.

“So, we have a deal,” he states as he takes his seat across from me.

“I said I’d be there for Kai, didn’t I? And my club will have your backs. You know damn well we owe Atticus’ MC a lot for the way they’ve always been there for us in the past. The MC you were once a part of saved our asses more than a few times.”

His grin is similar to a shark smiling; unreal but the chill it creates inside your head is deadly and intent.

“You’re hiding behind your club but I don’t care why we get the ball rolling. You and I are going to happen.” His voice is stern and filled with determination.

“Repeating shit isn’t going to make it real,” I fire back and we fall into a staring contest but it’s broken by the sound of a doorbell ringing.

Calvin stands and so do I.

“You can stay seated, it’s one of my deputies. I asked for a favor so he’s dropping something by,” he says and stalks out of the kitchen.

I wonder what the favor might be and my curiosity is satisfied when Calvin stalks back inside, no deputy in sight but there’s a large box in his hands I instantly recognize.

“You got me pie?” I ask in a small voice.
