“Right. Okay. Don’t mind me. You’ve probably handled a gazillion kidnapping cases but this is freaking me the fuck out and I can’t stop and my head is killing me.” I rub a hand over my face and try to grasp on to the last sliver of sanity my brain has left.

Colliding my gaze with the EMT I can’t help but snap, “No, I’m still not going to the hospital. I’m allowed to freak out for a moment, okay? His son means the world to me and he was taken under my watch.”

Suddenly I’m scooped up in Calvin’s arms and he’s rushing over to his patrol car. He gently puts me down in the passenger seat and rushes around to get behind the wheel.

Throwing his phone into my lap he says, “Call Atticus.”

He keeps his eyes on the road while I do as he says. Atticus’ voice fills the car a heartbeat later as he rattles off coordinates of some house on the edge of town.

“Good thing we were already in town. We’re close, arriving within two minutes near Kai’s location. Ezra and Ivar will be on their way too, Fisher is talking to them right now. They lost the van during their chase but they’re in the area because of it. What do you need, Sheriff?” Atticus asks and I watch Calvin’s side profile.

His face is set in stone like always but the white of his knuckles shows how much it takes for him to hold himself together. I reach out and place my hand over his knuckles for a brief touch to let him know I’m right here.

“Sit tight,” Calvin grunts. “I’m one minute behind you.”

“Will do, brother,” Atticus says and the line falls away.

In this moment Calvin is a father, a sheriff, a former brother of an MC he’s still very much a part of, as well as my old man. He’s the epitome of calm and yet a force to be reckoned with; as he should be.

Seconds tick by where I fear for Kai’s safety but deep down I know we have the twenty minute window the kidnappers gave us. They want the money and for that the need to keep Kai alive. And there’s no doubt in my mind the kidnappers are Elvira and Maurice.

I might not have seen Maurice but I looked right into Elvira’s eyes when someone smacked me in the head. And when I find the bitch? I hope they let me spend a few minutes alone with her because I am going to rip out every hair on her head along with every fingernail and knock every single tooth out of her mouth.

She’s going to be in a world of pain for taking my boy. He might not be my blood or mine by law but he’s in my heart where he belongs. And I’ll be damned if I let him slip through my fingers again. I failed him once by not protecting him enough, it won’t happen again.

CHAPTER EIGHT

– CALVIN –

My heart is hammering in my throat, ready to puke it right up at the thought of losing my boy. I just called in backup because as the sheriff–this involving my son–I officially have to deal with a lot of shit I don’t want to but it’s necessary. It’s a good thing I was once a part of Atticus’ MC and he’s taking lead in this investigation and everything connected to it because it gives me a lot of leeway.

I take a quick glance to my right and take in Cassia’s devastated face before dragging my eyes back to the road in front of me.

“It’s not your fault,” I tell her, knowing she must be eating herself up about it, and cover her hand with mine, needing to feel our connection to draw strength. “We’ll get him back.”

“We’d better,” she croaks. “I still can’t believe the bitch took him. She was behind the wheel, Calvin. She looked me dead in the eyes before someone hit me.”

“There’s no doubt these two are the ones responsible. Maurice has nothing to lose now that we have Gerard’s written statement, linking him to the murders of Elvira’s parents. Atticus mentioned they will have enough evidence to take a look at Elvira’s role in all of this but that was before the kidnapping. Now she’s fully tied to everything and going down,” I swear.

There is a row of bikes parked by the side of the road and I pull up right beside them. Atticus, Fisher, Ezra, Ivar, and a few others are gathered around.

Cassia is jumping out of the car as soon as I’ve parked and I’m right behind her. The bandage on her head is a reminder she’s hurt and should be in the hospital to have a CT scan to make sure she doesn’t have any head trauma. But to have her right here with me, fighting for my son as fierce if he would be her own is filling my heart with all kinds of emotions right now.

I shake my head–needing to clear it for what’s to come–and wrap an arm around her waist to keep her close while we join the others.

“Yuma has an eye on the house. As far as he can see they have Kai lying on a couch in the living room. We did a scan and it shows there are two bodies besides him in the house, both of them are in the kitchen,” Atticus informs me. “I know you called in backup but they just reached out and are twenty minutes out. You wanna handle it ourselves and go in now?”

“Yes,” I tell him with determination.

We’ve done this countless times as a team and I might have left the MC a few months ago but the routine is still there. The backup I’ve called in I don’t know and sorry to say, I don’t trust as fully as I do these men standing before me.

This is my son we’re talking about. If I’m putting his life on the line I will fucking do it with the people I’ve spent years with and who have had my back in life and death situations more than I can count on one hand.

I give my old lady’s hip a squeeze, knowing she’s about to get pissed but there’s no way around it. “But I need one of us to stay here with Cassia.”

“What?” she gasp-growls beside me.

I turn to fully face her, almost have to fight to take her head into my hands to make sure she can see every bit of emotion I’m letting my face fill with as I drop the stony mask I always hold in place.
