“I need to know you’re safe. You’re injured and we don’t even know how badly or if it’s just a superficial cut. My mind has to fully stay on the mission to get Kai out safe and I can’t if I have to worry about you too. Please, love. Stay in the car and rest.”

Her eyes fill and one lone tear slides over her cheek and lands on my fingers.

Swallowing hard she whispers fiercely, “You better bring him home safe.”

Who the fuck knows what happens next and one thing I’ve never done is make empty promises. It’s for this reason I kiss the fuck out of her, tasting the salt of her tears and hoping the next time I kiss her those tears will be happy ones; when we’re reunited with Kai.

Pulling back, I place one more kiss on her forehead and murmur, “Go rest, I’ll be coming for you before you know it.”

Her fingers wrap into the fabric of my shirt, holding me in place as she fiercely tells me, “I don’t care what you have to do, but you two come back to me safe and sound.” Her head swings to Atticus and the rest of the men surrounding him. “You make sure they get out safe. All of you or I’ll be really fucking pissed.”

Fisher grins. “Your old lady is a tough one.”

Ezra steps forward. “Since my old lady is her president, I’ll be the one staying behind to keep an eye on her.”

I step away from Cassia and Ezra guides her back to my car telling her, “You’re going to rest but don’t fall asleep. As soon as this shit is over, you’re going to the hospital. Hudsyn would have my balls if something happened with one of her own. Hell, she’ll have your lady balls as well and you know it.”

Cassia’s soft chuckle and agreement settles some of the worry about her in my gut as I join Atticus and the rest, bracing myself for what’s about to come just as the rumbling of bikes fills the air.

Coming up behind us are fifteen bikers parking and the sight of it slams into me like a sledgehammer. A large chunk of my old lady’s MC is strolling toward us. Hudsyn stops at my car, leaning in to say a few words to both her old man and my woman while Medley nods in my direction.

“You didn’t think we’d let this shit slide and let y’all have fun without us, did you?” Medley states.

“You’re Cassia’s old man: one of us,” Hudsyn states as she joins us. “We’re here to help and we damn well will. Now, what do you need?”

“We’re going in through the front and back,” Atticus starts, ready to accept all the help we can get.

“Seven of us will go with one of your teams through the front, the other seven will have the back. Ezra will be joining us since Remi will stay with Cassia,” Hudsyn says.

Hudsyn’s middle sister, Remi, is a nurse. It makes sense for her to stay with Cassia to keep a good eye on her and take her to the hospital in case she needs medical attention.

“No,” Cassia’s voice slices through the air. “Remi is going with you and one of Atticus’ guys will stay with me.”

We all turn to face Cassia. Remi shrugs. “I checked her out and her pupils are fine. I’d say her eyes are spitting fire right about now but my point is, if someone else stays with her all of this will be over sooner rather than later and she can go to the hospital.”

“I want her to go with you guys in case Kai needs medical attention right away,” Cassia snaps, her voice holding tremors of emotion.

My fucking heart leaps from the way she always puts my son first. How can we not agree to her suggestion? Cassia slips back into the car and we take another minute or two to talk things through before we all fall into a routine. I’m going through the front while Atticus will go through the back. The living room is closer to the front while the kitchen is in the back.

In this moment I don’t care about Elvira or Maurice or getting revenge; my main priority is getting my son the hell away from there. Our timing is flawless when we get near the house. It’s old and abandoned and kicking in the front door is easy enough. I rush inside, gun drawn as I feel Ezra and Fisher right behind me.

“Law enforcement! Get the fuck on the ground and put down your weapons or we’re going to fucking kill you,” Atticus bellows from another part of the house.

The crackling of bullets being fired is loud for an instant before silence falls. I ignore everything else, knowing the people behind me have my back, as I head into the living room. Kai is sagged into the cushions of the couch, eyes fucking closed as I tuck away my gun and sink to my knees.

“Kai…come on…Captain, look at Daddy, please,” I croak and try to find a pulse.

“Move,” Remi snaps and I want to fight her but know she’s here to help. Her hands move over his tiny body. “His pulse is strong,” she murmurs.

“Yuma found a bottle of chloroform along with a cloth in the back of the white van parked next to the house,” Fisher informs us, holding a finger to his earpiece where he’s getting the information from.

“It’s consistent with my findings,” Remi says. “We need to get him to the hospital to check him out.”

“All clear,” Atticus bellows from the back of the house.

“I can scoop him into my arms, right?” I ask Remi, not wanting to hurt my boy.

“We should probably wait for the–” she starts but I have him in my arms already.
