“Fresh air,” I grunt and stalk to the door.

Atticus appears before me, the front of his shirt is filled with blood spatter.

He glances down at Kai who is still unconscious and tells me, “Elvira and Maurice didn’t make it. The fucker saw us coming and killed Elvira before turning the gun on us, there wasn’t anything anyone could have done differently to prevent this.” His eye slides to Kai. “Ambulance will be here soon and Fisher just told me Cassia is waiting outside. He called her as soon as everything was clear.”

He steps aside and I tell him in all sincerity, “Thanks, Prez.”

It doesn’t matter if I stepped away from his MC; they’ve always made sure I felt like I’m still a part of it. Stepping outside is another warm embrace by the way my woman is surrounded by her MC sisters. The ones who are just as fierce in protecting their own when they showed up to assist in helping to get my son back.

Overcome by emotions I try to keep my stony appearance but when I place my still unconscious son on the stretcher while EMTs take over, I fucking crash and feel wetness flowing down my cheeks.

In a blur I notice Cassia rushing toward me from my left, her arms wrapping around my waist in a tight embrace, allowing me to bury my head into the crook of her neck to hide the fears and worry slicing through me.

I pushed everything to the back of my mind the second I realized my son was taken, only focusing to get him back but to have him in front of me, still unconscious is hard as fuck to watch. I can only hope he’s okay and comes out of this unscarred.

Cassia’s scent envelops me and the soft murmur of words coming from her gives me the strength to pull myself together. All this time I never thought I’d reach a point in my life where I’d feel complete and afraid to lose everything I hold dear.

My son, my woman, my family. All connected, grounding me when I feel I’m about to fall apart.

“He’s waking up,” the EMT says and I’ve never heard better words spoken to lighten my heart.

Cassia moves to the side and I gently brush my thumb along my son’s sleepy face.

“Hey,” I croak.

Kai blinks a few times and starts to rub his eyes. “I think I took a nap. Can I have something to drink?”

He sighs and curls back to his side to drift off again.

“We’re going to head to the hospital,” the EMT states.

“The both of us are going with you.” I don’t give him an inch of space to argue when I guide Cassia into the ambulance.

Kai’s eyes drift open and closed and Cassia reaches out to take one of his hands in hers as she places a kiss on his forehead and gently slides her fingers through his hair. So fucking tender and radiating the love she feels for my boy.

His biological mother might not be alive anymore and the very reason he’s in this ambulance, but the woman sitting next to him is the epitome of motherhood and I’m fucking thankful to have her in our lives.

I was a fool to push her away at first and I’m lucky to have restored the error of my ways because from here on out there won’t be a day spent without this woman at our side. I’ll make sure to put a ring on her finger and who knows, maybe one day put a baby in her belly for a chance to let Kai become a big brother.

Fuck knows there’s an overload of love to share between the three of us. Just one look at the loving woman next to me ensures my life will hold a future that will keep growing bright, no matter what dreams either of us are set to fulfill.

EPILOGUE

Seven years later

– CASSIA –

“I like seeing those lush lips set in a smile,” Calvin says, dragging my gaze away from our kids who are helping to herd Longhorns from one pasture to the other.

“I thought you liked them better when they are wrapped around–” I start but don’t get to finish my sentence when his mouth catches mine in a scorching kiss.

Pulling back, he rumbles, “You know better than to say those things in public where I can’t ravish you.”

The thought of him ravishing me any time or place always causes anticipation to flow through my veins. After all these years our love and desire has only grown stronger. Of course, we’ve had our difficulties and not all days are filled with sunshine and happiness but we make it work.

We made a vow seven years ago, sitting at a hospital bed waiting for Kai to recover from being chloroformed, freaking kidnapped. All of us were thankful Kai didn’t remember anything about what happened and I guess it’s good he never needs to know what kind of danger he was in or what his mother caused.

The vow we made was to hold one another to live our lives to the fullest without regret; filling our hearts with joy and our heads with loving memories to cherish for a lifetime to come. Calvin proposed the next day and we were married three months later.
