“You mean I can stop procrastinating tomorrow?”

“Exactly, come on Porsche, you’re telling me there isn’t a little part of you seeing the new chunk of grade A prime man and not considering at least a quick ride?”

The two women had bonded over the years. Having lived together in New Mexico until they were transferred to Montana meant they could read the other well. Zoe was one of the few women Porsche could join in an impromptu dance at the club. The rotation and moves coordinated without hours of practice and they even played off each other in bed from time to time when a member couldn’t decide.

Porsche hiked one leg up on the chair, bending at the knee and hugging it a bit close. “Hey, do we have a new prospect or visiting nomad named, Bugs?”

“Not that I’ve noticed,” she said. “But I was passing through for leftovers so I wasn’t really paying attention to the cocks strutting around the clubhouse.”

“You still hungry?” Porsche asked. “I have a few things I could whip up.”

“Nah I really should get going I do have to work tonight.” Zoe smiled brightly and took another sip, but didn’t move.

“Okay bummer, I took the night off. I told Topaz I was going to help Mike out and take care of Sydney. He’s having a tough time of it right now.”

“What’s going on with that dude anyways?” Zoe’s curiosity peaking.

Porsche worried if she had seen the Amber Alert before Hack had it taken down. Zoe was a club girl. She knew the rules, one Porsche at times needed to remember. The fact they hadn’t shut stuff down or hurried the Hanovers off the property was a good indication they were to be trusted as family.

“Spring break trip and he’s just helping the club out with some things. I don’t mind taking care of Sydney for him.”

“That little girl has issues. It’s not like an eight year old to carry around a blanket and suck her thumb.”

The mention of the pink blanket sent a shock of worry through her as she rushed to the room to see it wasn’t tucked up next to the bear. Had she left it in the clubhouse? Or dropped it along the way? Running back to the window she scanned the distance between the clubhouse and saw Mike swiping it from a thorned bush planted by the porch of the clubhouse. His eyes glancing up to the apartment and she held her hand to her heart in thanks once their eyes locked.

The last thing Porsche wanted to do was spread around rumors and she only knew a small bit of the story anyway. “I don’t know what’s up with her. But I don’t mind helping out. She’s a sweet little thing for sure.”

A knock on the door startled Porsche because it had only been a minute since she’d seen Mike out front. Crossing over to the door she opened it to see Mike standing there sheepishly with the pink blanket in hand.

“Hey, Turbo how’s my little girl?” Mike asked with a little crook to the corner of his lips, a shift had occurred in him for sure. The question set her back a moment, setting off small brush fires throughout her body until she realized he wasn’t talking about her.

“Syd, right,” she said opening the door wider. “Come on in, she’s still passed out in my room.”

She watched as he walked in, taking in Zoe’s words about the muscles upon muscles and had to agree, the T-shirt he wore was being stretched across a very sinewy back she would love scraping her nails over. Glancing back toward her the bright cornflower blue eyes with hints of gray caught her staring and she quickly turned her head to the side.

“I got to get going to work.” Zoe hightailed it out the door, catching Porsche’s fingers for a quick second and giving a little tug of encouragement. Normally it was one to get her moving to a trick for a little double teaming action and wallet emptying time. This one was different, a take a chance look passed between the two of them.

“My room is over there if you want to give her the blanket and check on her,” she offered and followed as he cut his way through her apartment. He stood silent for a moment watching his daughter from the doorway. A shift of light to dark and back again as he moved the large frame stealthily to place the blanket next to her before retreating.

“Thank you, if she’d have woken up without it I’m not sure what would have happened,” he said keeping his voice low as he closed the door slightly, but leaving a crack.

“Wubbies are important,” Porsche said.

“They were,” he said, a mournful look in his eyes. “She’d outgrown it and I was a little sad when she did. Now—”

His jaw and eyes clenched tight as he gathered himself. Porsche reached out and lightly placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Sorry, I just—I’m sent in the hardest situations our military faces. Sent on missions most couldn’t imagine. Complex. Layered. But I’m sent because of my ability to kill,” he said stepping away from the door and crossing to one of Porsche’s upholstered chairs. Sitting, he rested his elbows on his knees and brought his hands together in front of his face as he bent a bit. “And that fact wasn’t enough to make a man think twice before touching my daughter. What hope is there in the world when these monsters exist?”

“I don’t know what happened,” Porsche said sitting beside him in her own chair. “Sydney isn’t talking much. I know she’s been hurt, but she seems to feel safe here and that’s the biggest step to recovery. A place to process and work through—”

“How does one work through being fucked by not only her stepfather, but having her mother hold her down during?” Mike bit and Porsche’s mouth went dry.

A hard lump landing in the center of her throat stealing her breath away. While she was pretty sure the little girl had been molested by her stepfather the scenario Mike had laid at her feet tightened her chest and caused horrible images to flash through her mind. Ones she wanted scrubbed with the harshest bleach known to man.

“Again apologies, I’ve spent the morning being a normal, functioning adult and doing what I know,” he said. “For a half a second, I forgot about what happened until I saw her in that bed. Somber, content and thought about that damn blanket.”

“Was it one of her receiving ones?” Porsche asked.
