“He’s dead, like dead, dead, in the ground somewhere,” she said. “Cut up on an autopsy table then chucked in a hole in a Potter’s Field I assume.”

“And yet, your body trembles and you want me to believe my daughter will be fine.”

“Your daughter doesn’t have decades of being obstinate for Doc to hack through with a machete,” Porsche said, wishing the warming between her and him could last beyond this fleeting moment. Much like she provided a safe space for Sydney, Porsche was finding a place in his arms that was more than soothing. “Her trust in grownups was broken, but she’s got no problem cooking with Maggie and crashing in my bed. Which means deep inside your little girl is there, hiding and waiting until the storm passes. There will be clean up and a vase may be broken, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be whole again.”

“You learned all this by joining the Steels and getting paid for an exchange for services?” he asked.

“In a manner of speaking, members and Hoez are almost on the same level. We’re all basically jacks of a dozen trades around here. Look at Doc’s fiancé, he’s a part time deputy for Hollywood, is currently raising money for a fire truck so he can be the fire chief and helps the guys flip houses.”

No reason to clue Mike into the gun running Chief is a part of along with the other men. That was club business, this man was in a Henley not leather. In many ways the man was a rescue on the run with his daughter and rescues didn’t always learn beyond medical and shelter before moving on. A sadness washed over her from the thought he was going to be moving on, this was a stop in the road, not a final destination making her work harder to guard her heart.

“What do you do for them?”

“A variety of things.” Porsche didn’t want to explain what that meant. She wanted to keep some things private and while he’d seen the Becky Homecky side of her, the dancer was a whole other person.

It had to be, she stepped out of her normal place and fell into the girl on stage. The one who danced and teased. Who could spin on a pole and make men fall with a hitch to her hip. There was a strength to her Porsche couldn’t command anywhere else. It was empowering, addictive in many ways and had become a bit tiring. Free was claimed and found she loved what she did and never even spoke of quitting. Topaz had stepped back, taking on the managing role at the Roadside and only dancing when she was in a mood. Porsche was in limbo in many ways, but Mike’s arms were around her giving her a way to lean.

“What’s a Hoez?”

Her heart lurched a bit before tightening and she shifted as she had a thousand times before with hundreds of men. Extricating herself from his arms only unlike those in the past he wasn’t struggling to have her stay close. She fell away as easily as a dandelion puff in a stiff breeze.

“Come on, let’s get you back inside to finish your meeting and collect Sydney.” Porsche reached for his hand, their first two fingers locking around each other as they walked toward Maggie’s.
