“No,” she breathed.

Jonan felt the need to speak. “I have siblings. One brother and a sister.”

It was enough to get her attention.

“You do?”

“Aye,” he nodded. “There’s me brother, Allan, and me sister, Fiona.”

“That’s wonderful.”

“Och, nae really. When ye have siblings, there are quite a lot of fights.”

Amelia’s eyes widened. “Ame—Nora and I never fight.” She fidgeted slightly. “Sure, we disagree often, but we never argue.”

Jonan laughed. It had been rather different from them. “Allan’s only ten moons younger than me.”

“Not even a year?”

Jonan laughed at how shocked she was. “Aye, we argued a lot. Allan was always out to prove that we were equals. Then, there’s darling Fiona. Allan is two years her senior, but if ye asked her, it didnae matter. Ma and Da spoiled her terribly. Allan and I were no better. None of us could refuse her a thin’.”

“That sounds rather lovely.”

She’s smiling again.

“Is she in the clan?”

“Nae. She wed the Laird of the Blackstock clan years ago. She has two little girls.”

“Do you ever see her?” Amelia asked.

“Nae, nae often. I have nae seen her in at last four years. The Blackstock clan is a five-day journey.”

Amelia nodded understandably. “Nora and I always imagined what it would be like to have a sibling. We wanted a little sister or brother when we were much younger. But as we grew, we were happier that it was just two of us.”

“Why?”

“I do not think any child enjoys growing up without a mother.”

Jonan nodded and, once again, they fell into silence. But it wasn’t awkward this time. They sat silently, watching the stars.

“I have never stargazed before.”

“Ye have never watched the stars?” It was Jonan’s turn to be shocked.

Amelia nodded. “I have missed quite a lot.”

“What did ye do as a young lass?”

“We were kept indoors, mostly.”

“I bet me Ma wished she could have done that with us. Allan and I were forever outside.”

“Well, Father did keep us inside. We didn’t have any friends, and we never went visiting. He is a busy man.”

Jonan’s dislike for her father grew more each time he heard of the man.

“Ye must nae have gotten into a lot of trouble.”
