Nora laughed. “Oh, quite the opposite. Nora was the well-behaved one. I got into quite a bit of trouble.”

“What did ye do?” Jonan asked, interested.

“When I was younger, it was mostly little mistakes. Father did not like it when I dropped a glass or a cup.”

Jonan scoffed. “Children drop things. ‘Tis how they learn. Leah tripped often as a babe. You wouldnae be able to tell it now.” He could not help the hint of pride that slipped in.

“My father did not believe that. When I got older, however, I got into more trouble. Father did not like it when I sneaked off into town with our food.”

Jonan arched a brow. “Ye? Were ye off to a picnic?”

“Oh, no. I had a penchant for handing out his food to our hungry townsfolk.”

“In England?” Jonan almost couldn’t believe her.

“Yes, and when we moved to Scotland.”

“He caught ye and ye didnae stop?” Jonan admired how strong-minded she would have had to be to defy her father.

“No, I only got smarter.” Even in the moonlight, Jonan could see her eyes light up mischievously as she grinned.

“But ye seemed so frightened of him.”

“I am,” she nodded. “But they needed the food. I did not have a choice.”

“That was very brave for a lass,” he said, impressed.

“Thank you,” she turned to him with a humored smile.

Oddly, her words pleased him as he realized was a caring person. She was the perfect Lady for the clan.

He gazed out into the lake, enjoying the peace that the waves instilled in him. He was born with a natural affinity for water. As a child, he would frequently abandon hislessons and escape to the lake, where he would spend hours watching the water and skipping stones across it.

He looked over to Amelia, who was sitting quietly beside him.

“Did ye ever learn to skip stones as a young lass?”

“Skip stones?” She turned to him, confused.

Jonan stood and offered her his hand. “Walk with me. You must mind your step,” he advised as he led her carefully to the loch.

“The lake is even more beautiful up close,” Amelia gushed.

Jonan bent down and began to scout for the perfect pebble.

Amelia bent beside him. “What are you doing?”

When he lifted his head, hers was only a few inches away. Her beautiful green eyes sparkled in the moonlight.

But she did not hold his gaze.

Jonan was confused as to why she averted her eyes whenever they looked at each other. He did not want her to look away.

“What are you doing?” she asked again.

“Ye cannae skip rocks with any mere stone. Ye need a flat one.” Finding a rock in the middle of the night wasn't as simple. The sand was littered with oddly shaped rocks and shells, and no stone was flat enough. Nonetheless, he kept looking.

He found one just beside him, half-buried in the sand. Jonanhanded it to Amelia.
