“Flat,” she observed, “really flat.” She handed it back to him and began to scout for one herself. When she eventually spotted one she excitedly picked it up and handed it to him.

“Flat enough,” he approved.

They walked back to the loch, each of them holding a rock.

“I’ll show ye how.” Masterfully, he threw it, skipping it five times.

“How did you do that?” she turned to him with a lovely grin on her face.

“It’s all in the angle and the wrist.”

Amelia’s eyes studied his angled pose.

“Flick your wrist like this.”

Amelia flicked the stone onto the water. When it started skipping, Jonan found himself grinning.

“One, two… oh!” said exhaled.

“Impressive, for a novice,” he praised.

“Really?” Her eyes met his even as she smiled bashfully at his praise. “I wanted it to skip at least three times.”

“Well, ye learned in yer first try. It took me multiple tries to master it. Allan and Fiona learned before me and gave me hell over it.”

“That must have been awful,” she said, laughing.

“Aye, but I took me revenge when I learned.” He gave a deep and contented sigh. “We should head back to the keep.”

“Yes. It is rather late, isn’t it?”

They walked quietly to the carriage. The keep was silent and dark when they arrived. They made their way in, taking care not to make any noise or attract the attention of any of the soldiers stationed outside.

Jonan knew every nook and cranny of the keep, so he took Amelia's hand in his and led her through the courtyard and into the corridor that led to her chamber. All was silent except for the sound of crickets. They passed through several doors until they arrived at herchambers.

“I should nae have kept ye out so long. I still need ye in the fields on the morrow.”

“No. I enjoyed it. The lake was beautiful.”

Jonan stood for a moment, searching for the right words to say but soon, he gave up. “Good night, Amelia.”

“Goodnight,” she said in response.

Jonan waited until he heard the defining close of her door to leave.

I should have said more. He chastised himself. It had been clear in her twinkling eyes that she had expected more of him.

Does she fancy me?

“I should have said more,” Jonan muttered under his breath as he walked to his chambers.

But as he reached his door, athought hadnagged at him all the way back from the loch.

Do I fancy her also?
