He immediately pulled out his sword.

"You dare steal from me a second time, filth?" he said sarcastically.

Jonan pulled out a blade as well, and then his axe.

“I have nae the time to fight, but if ye force me hand then I must go through ye to get Nora to safety."

“Guards!” Bennett summonedbefore charging at him.

Jonan swung his axe at him, who blocked it with his sword, but eventually Englishman.

Nora rushed around the lord and snatched his sword from his grasp.

“Nora, you cannot run forever. I will—"

His words were caught in his mouth as Nora smacked him across the face with the hilt of the blade.

“You deserve more than this! So much more!” she snapped at him.

Jonan smiled and her frown softened when she saw how proud he was.

"If ye come any closer, I will slit yer lord's throat," Jonan warned the men who burst out the door.

“Attack them!” Lord Bennett yelledbut none of them were brave enough to risk their master's death.

“Let's take one of the carriages,” he said and they hurried forward , dragging Bennett along with him.

"Ride for the gate or my husband will kill Lord Bennett!" she yelled at one of the coachmen, who grabbed the reins of the horses hurriedly.

Theyloaded himinto the carriageand the coachman whipped the horses into motion.

“If I see anyone behind us, I will slit his throat," Jonan yelled..

“The two of you cannot get away with this,” Bennett shouted before Nora tore off the ends of her gown and gagged him. Jonan quickly removed his belt to secure his handsbehind his back.

“I am so glad you came for me,” she said, holding his hand in hers.

“I daenae know what I would have done if anything had happened to ye," Jonan replied.

“What about Callan?” Nora wondered.

“I shall meet him by the bridge,” he replied.

They were soon at the crossing that led outside of town.

“I feared that ye might get caught,” Callan shouted from atop his steed.

"Get down," Jonan ordered, untying Bennett's hands and kicking him out of the carriage as they rode away.

“I will find you, Nora!” Bennett spat.

“If ye step on me lands again, ye will have war!” Jonan warnedas they hisslimy figure fadedfrom view.

“I am happy you found me and that you did not get hurt. I would have blamed myself if anything had happened to you, for my sake,” Nora told him with a sad smile.

"How did you find me?" she asked.

Once Jonan narrated the whole story, Nora rested her head on Jonan's shoulder as they rode toward the inn, where Amelia was waiting for them. Callan rode ahead of them, eager to reach the inn.
