"Hello?" I answered back, still seeing nothing but trees and brush.

"Can you, can you help me?" the voice grunted, out of breath.

I inched forward but stopped short when I came upon a pit wedged between two large spruces. It was only as wide as I was tall, but it was deep. Very deep. The Beta stood at the bottom, his head busted and bleeding. He was breathing heavily and trying to claw his way up the slippery walls.

I wanted to scream down at him. Call him a murderer, rip him to pieces, and watch him die. But I took a deep breath, knowing the pathetic wolf wasn't my main target. I wanted those Alphas. I wanted Hida.

"You! Omega!" he shouted. "Help me!"

I snorted. "How?"

He huffed, looking at his surroundings. The walls of the hole were packed smooth with red clay, firm and unyielding. There appeared to be no footholds, and none of the surrounding trees had branches that could dip low enough to help him up.

"Just...try to reach for me!" he yelled up, annoyed. He wiped the blood running down the side of his face, then held his hand out as if expecting me to take it.

"Are you simple?" I asked, sitting down at the pit's edge to catch my breath. I looked over the pathetic creature sitting and pouting at the bottom of the hole.

"What?" he scoffed. "Don't you dare speak to me like that, Omega! I may be at a disadvantage here, but I still outrank you to our kind. Now help me up!" he yelled. I was sure he meant it to sound fierce, but his demand came out as just plain whiny.

"So you're not simple?"

"Why the fuck would you ask that?" He looked so angry. I enjoyed it.

"Well, you keep insisting I grab your hand, but there's no possible way that I'd be able to reach you." He fumed at my words, letting out a snort of a growl. "Plus, I've been following you all day, but you haven't noticed. Where are you going?"

"Help me out of here, and I'll tell you."

"Tell me how to find the wolves that killed my mate, and I'll help you out of there."

The Beta rocked on the balls of his feet, staring up at me. I could see his anger building. Frustrated, he launched himself at the dirt wall again, clawing at the smooth surface. But he found no purchase and slid back down onto his knees, defeated.

He stood up again, face red and panting hard. "Help me out of here, and I will spare your life, Omega. Do nothing, and I will kill you!"

"Well, that's tempting," I said, picking at the blades of grass around me and lazily tossing them into the pit. "How do I find the wolves that killed my mate?"

"What are you going to do? Huh? You look to be just a pup. You're no match for them," he said with a sudden edge of sincerity.

"Let me worry about that." I didn't want to admit that I had no idea what I would do when I found them. "Just tell me where they are."

"Vaesen," he sighed. "They'll be heading back to Vaesen. But that kind of journey is too far for a pup like you. I know you're angry your mate is dead, but let it go. Go home."

"Why did my mate deserve to die?"

"Orders from the King and his eldest, Strayton. She's a horrible, bloodthirsty bitch. Take my words seriously and go home."

I looked around the quiet forest, taking in his words. He must have thoughtIwas simple to think I would believe the King of Wolves ordered a lowly Madra Village guard killed. But it was pretty obvious the Beta wasn't going to tell me the truth.

"Why have you been acting like this today?" I had to know. He was just so odd.

He cocked his head, brows furrowed.

I raised my voice, annoyed. “You've been smelling flowers and playing in streams. Are you not scared that those wolves will find you again?"

"They'll find me. They always do." He shrugged, seemingly unaffected by the fact. "So I always try to enjoy myself while I can. You never know what day will be your last, so I try to enjoy my freedom until Byriel finds me again."

"He needs you to find the wolves to kill?"

"Kind of. He needs me to tell him if the mark is right."
