I jumped up. "Byriel? A black wolf when shifted?"

She nodded.

"Was one of the other wolves tan in color?"

She nodded again.

I rubbed my face hard, then laughed. It was horrible, but I couldn't help it.

"You and I have a common enemy, little one," I sighed. "The same Alphas killed my mate. All because of a mark on her skin. I wasn't there when it happened, but I was able to catch up to them before they could slip my village borders. Byna, the tan wolf, still had my mate's blood on her muzzle. The three of them overpowered me, though." I gestured to the ugly scar down my arm. "I've spent almost a year tracking them. I was close at your village, but they managed to escape me again."

"It just keeps getting better," Lex whispered, his eyes wide with excitement.

The Omega looked at me with an onslaught of emotion. Sad, but so much more. Rage, sorrow, uncertainty, and exhaustion poured out of her big, bright eyes. I hated how much comfort I found in our shared grief.

"I'm sorry about your mate," she mumbled. "The tan wolf, Byna, she was the one that ripped my mate's throat out."

I paused, confused. "Why do you want to kill Hida and not the one that actually killed your mate?"

"Hida mocked Korban and tortured him by threatening to hurt me. He held me down and forced me to watch my mate die. That wolf has no honor and made Korban's last moments before his death as horrible as he could. He tormented both of us for his own pleasure. No," she said with a set resolution in her voice, "he deserves to die, and I deserve to be the one to do it."

The fire blazed in her eyes as she spoke. Even though she was so small, she carried her anger well, and for a moment, I truly felt she would be able to exact her revenge. She had an Alpha's determination.

"I look forward to killing beside you," I nodded.

I could feel it deep within my bones. This was the path the Moon had chosen for me. This was our shared destiny, and I would help her see it through. I would help her and protect her, and we would both get the blood owed to us.

Tzidal nodded in return, her expression hard. Tears clung to the corners of her eyes, but she didn't let them fall. She was an impressive Omega. She was an impressive wolf.

"I am sorry about your mates," Lex said. His signature smirk was gone, and he seemed almost sincere, but I knew better. sirens weren't sincere. They were too cunning. "Your mate," Lex asked me, "did she suffer?"

"No, she didn't. I was told it was quick." I kept my head up, refusing to allow either one of them to see my grief. "That was the only luck she had that day. My brother's mate was with her in her last moments, and he said it was quick."

"Your brother's mate is a boy?" Lex asked, a curious expression on his face.

"Yes," I said, not understanding his confusion.

"Why do so many werewolves have male mates?" the siren asked, turning to Tzidal. "More than any other species, the wolves I hunt seem to prefer males. Why is that?"

Tzidal shrugged. "You don't know anything about the images you pull from someone's mind?"

"Nope. Just that rogue wolves crave dick."

"That's not how wolves work, Lex," Tzidal laughed. "We aren't attracted to others like that. It's more about scent and instinct, not male or female. We fall in love with someone's wolf, not their body. I'm sure it's just a coincidence the wolves you've met all loved males at some point.”

"I highly doubt any of those Alphas were capable of such an emotion. Trust me," Lex snorted.

"I just don't understand creatures that pick mates based solely on such meaningless physical attributes. Does nothing else matter?" I leered at Lex.

"You're asking the wrong person," he laughed. “Sirens don't have mates. We have dinner.”

Before the Barren Lands

Joon shiftedinto his wolf and hunted along the outskirts of the forest, hoping to find a decent meal. I had been living off berries and bird eggs for too long and was desperate for the taste of meat. My wolf purred in approval when the Alpha returned with a sizable boar or at least something that resembled one. Either way, it tasted good.

Lex sauntered off as the sun started to set, saying he wanted to find something proper to eat before we left the forest, and trolls and cave dwellers were all he'd have access to. According to him, sex with a troll was just as bad as eating one.
