The scratching of nails on wet stone drifted toward us as we wandered further into the darkness. Two glassy, glowing eyes appeared in the black void in the distance.

"What the fuck is that?!" Lex screamed, his fear hitting a crescendo. He squeezed my neck hard, pressing our bodies together, as his eyes darted all around. I tried pulling at his arms to free myself, but his grip was too tight.

“Calm the fuck down!” Joon gritted out in a harsh whisper.

"This might not be a good mission for you, Siren," Byriel said, his brows raised.

"No shit," Joon spat, a look of complete fury on his face. He turned quickly, scanning the tunnel.

Just as Lex's arms loosened from around my neck, a creature rushed toward us. Lex screamed, his voice reverberating off the walls and water. A large hound bounded forward, its tongue hanging out of its mouth as it rushed down the passageway toward the tunnel exit.

"Oh my goodness!" Lex gasped, letting out a nervous laugh. He released me and rubbed his sweaty palms on his knees. "It's just a dog. It's just a fucking dog." He placed his hand over his heart, nervous energy radiating off him. "You need to tell your cousin back there to not scare the shit out of me like that!"

"Cousin?" I snorted, trying to keep my voice down. I could see both Alphas tense as they kept creeping forward.

"Yes. The dog," Lex said plainly. "You're a wolf. He's a descendant of wolves. You're practically related, aren't you?"

"We're all connected by the stars and the Moon," Byriel spoke softly. "We are all one another's brothers and sisters."

"Okay," Joon said, coming to a halt. He pointed at Byriel. "You are a bit much right now, and I don't have the energy for it." He pointed at me. "You need to stop encouraging him. And you." He pointed at Lex. "Need to calm the fuck down and stop talking about such stupid shit!"

"I'm sorry," Lex huffed. "I get chatty when I'm nervous."

"Really? Are youalwaysnervous?" Joon asked, his eyes comically wide. "Because you talk non-fucking-stop, and I need you to shut the fuck up right now."

He stared at Lex, daring him to speak. The siren looked bored. Slowly, Joon turned and walked.

"Asshole," Lex mumbled.

Joon spun, his nostrils flaring. "I swear, if you don't stop talking right this fucking second, I'm going to —"

"What?" Lex snapped. "You're gonna what?"

"Who is there?" A voice called out, echoing off the walls.

Lex jumped and flung his body into the nearest passageway. Footsteps in the distance quickened, and a guard appeared just around the corner, searching for the source of the sound. I shoved Joon as hard as I could into the passageway with Lex. Thankfully, I caught him off guard, and he stumbled out of sight.

I grabbed Byriel's face firmly in my hands and crashed my lips to his.

Everything went silent but became so loud at the same time. I could hear the heavy steps of the guard walking toward us, Lex's frantically soft breaths, and Joon's deep rumbling growl that seemed to never end.

"Byriel? Sir!” a female guard said, stopping and bowing.

I pulled my lips off of the Alpha's and pretended to blush, pushing my face into his chest. He stuttered for a moment before pulling himself together.

"Vera," he said, clearing his throat.

"I'm so sorry, Sir.” She stood at attention, her black ponytail swaying behind her. "I didn't realize it was you."

"Byriel," I said in a soft, flirty voice. "I'm cold, and you promised me a warm bed." Joon's feet shifted against the stone, and I closed my eyes, hoping he wouldn't do anything stupid.

"That I did...my Omega," Byriel smiled stiffly before turning back to the guard. "Please don't tell the stewards you caught me down here. I'm trying very hard to avoid my responsibilities tonight."

"Of course, Sir,” the guard said in a very formal manner before turning on her heel and disappearing back down the way she came.

We waited for the sound of her footsteps to completely disappear before Joon and Lex came out of the shadows. Joon glared down the tunnel where the guard just vanished, not meeting my eyes.

Byriel ushered us further into the darkness and toward the last passageway. He and Lex disappeared around the corner, but Joon grabbed me by the arm and held me back before I could follow. He pushed me gently against the cold wall and placed both hands on either side of my head, trapping me.
