Page 22 of The Blue Path

Byriel glanced back at Blue, and rage burst from Joon's chest, making my eyes water.

I took a step back, not interested in putting myself between the two alphas. I hated it when they worked each other up. "What's wrong?" I asked Joon.

"Tell her," my mate demanded, keeping his red eyes on the dark wolf.

Byriel shook his head in confusion. "Tell her what?" He pushed his hands into his pockets. He was trying very hard to look relaxed, and it didn't suit him. I had spent several months with the alpha, and he always looked tense. This was odd.

"He's blue," Joon said as if that explained everything.

"Okay?" I didn't understand. Then the prophecy's words hit me like a rolling boulder, and I pulled the parchment out of my pocket, re-reading it.

'Trust the blue path…'

"Do you think he's the blue path?" I asked Joon, my eyes wide as I tried to think what this might mean.

"He's a blue Omega," Joon said. "He has blue skin, his name is Blue, and he lives in a village no one knows about. Which means it probably hasn't been searched by the palace guard." He turned to Byriel. "Do you think he's the key to freeing your King?"

"I don't know, and I don't care," Byriel growled, his anger quickly growing. "What I do know is he's unmated and outside his village. I can't leave an innocent wandering around the forest. It's far too dangerous."

I shoved the parchment back into my pocket, unsure what to do. I didn't think Byriel would hurt Blue, but there was something in the alpha's eye that made my wolf tense.

"There's no fucking way I'm letting you touch him," Joon growled, jabbing a finger at the dark alpha.

Byriel balled up his fists, his eyes glowing red. "What are you implying?"

"That you're a piece of shit intent on saving your precious King. You've murdered so many. What's one more to a monster like you?" Joon mocked.

Byriel tilted his head up, his jaw tight. "Your omega has repeatedly promised to kill our King, and I have done nothing but protect her when you couldn't." A slow growl pushed from Joon's chest. "While I doubt a single, small omega could manage to kill a King. If I was truly looking to murder innocents, she wouldn't be standing next to you."

I heard Joon's fist connect with Byriel's face before my mind registered what had happened. The alphas launched at each other, a blur of teeth, claws, and growls.

Sick of them, I turned away, not interested in watching the two wolves prove who was the mightier beast.

Blue's terrified eyes were fixed on the fighting alphas behind me as he burrowed hard into Lex's arms. The siren shook his head and blew out a frustrated sigh.

"Hopefully, this will calm them down," I said, kneeling on the other side of Blue and eyeing the satchel slung over his shoulder. "Would it be okay if I took my bag back?"

He nodded, shamefaced, and pulled the strap over his head. "Sorry," he mumbled, his eyes flickering between me and the fight in the distance. "I shouldn't have taken it."

"That's okay." I smiled, placing it in my lap. "Does your village have more wolves like you?"

I wanted to distract him from the display of dominance that was sure to distress the omega. I didn't know what kind of effect they might have on him, and I was thankful he hadn't slipped into his heat simply from their presence. Omegas always struggled when reincorporated into the pack after presenting. They had to be slowly exposed to a foreign alpha's scent. I could only assume Blue was a mix of some other creature that may be muted his omega instincts in that way. It would explain his odd coloring.

"No," he whispered, twisting his fingers together. "Well, not exactly like me, but there are other wolves." He turned to Lex. "I'm sorry, but I don't think the elders would be happy with me inviting an unknown siren within the borders either."

A vicious roar echoed through the trees behind me. Blue flinched. Then his eyes went wide, and his mouth slightly ajar as he sat up to get a better view.

"They shifted," he whispered in awe.

I glanced at the werewolves—one shaggy and brown, the other sleek and grey. They snarled, bit, and grappled—a tangle of two powerful beasts slamming into each other repeatedly. I narrowed my eyes, noticing how neither was going for the other's throat. They were simply brawling, and it infuriated me to no end.

"How about we make our way to your village while those two are distracted?" Lex asked Blue.

He nervously shook his head, pressing his lips together. "No," he whispered. "They already don't like me. They'll kill me if I bring in dangerous outsiders."

"How about just you and me?" I asked. "Surely, they wouldn't be upset with another omega visiting."

Blue's hypnotizing eyes moved slowly over my face before finally nodding. "I'm sorry," he mumbled to Lex.
