I’m So Disappointed

My cell phone woke me from a dream. I had a crick in my neck from where I’d been lying on the couch incorrectly. I rubbed at it with one hand as I stretched out the other to the coffee table, clumsily trying to swipe the screen.

“Hello?” I said, blearily.

“Hey, Kylee,” Jody’s voice said down the line. “I just wanted to check on you.”

“Oh, thanks. I’m good,” I said.

“How’s the new job?”

“Crazy.” I cringed at the terminology. “But crazy good, you know? Busy.”

I was rambling.

“OK. Yeah. That’s good to know,” Jody said, uncharacteristically awkward.

“So, what’s up? How’s Neal?” I asked.

“Oh, you know, Neal; he’s fit as a fiddle.”

“Great. You?”

“School’s almost out. Can’t wait for the holidays.”

“I bet. I won’t get a holiday for at least another six months now.”

“And no unlimited sick leave, either,” she said, laughing.

I stared at the couch.

“Um,” she mumbled. “I just wanted to let you know that Sean’s staying at our place.”

“Your place?”

“Yeah. So, you know, don’t turn up unannounced,” she said, faux cheerfully.

“OK, I won’t.”

“Just until he gets back on his feet, you know?”

“Yeah,” I said frowning.

“He’s really cut up, Ky.”

I said nothing.

“A real mess.”

Still nothing.

“Do you even know what you’ve done to him?”

“What?” I whispered.

“Well, you seem to be doing just fine. New job. New car. New house. He’s still in the same world you left behind, and it’s killing him, Kylee.”
