“No,” I murmured. “Not a lot of people do.”

“Long time, no see,” a voice said over my shoulder.

I spun around and smiled at Tayla.

“Yeah. Fancy meeting you here?” I said.

“You’re in my territory now, kid,” she replied, laughing. “What made you come out to Saint Luke’s?”

“Got sick of the shopping at Botany.”

“Oh, the woes of a jet setting sales rep.”

“I wish,” I said, smiling.

Tayla shifted on her feet and checked her cell phone.

I shifted on my feet and watched her.

“How are you?” I asked.

“Good. Good.”

She didn’t ask me.

“Sean came over for dinner last night,” she suddenly said. “I made him bread and butter pudding. You know how he loves that.”

My stomach flipped.

“He got shitfaced.”

“Tayla,” I warned.

“It’s OK; I took care of him.”

I started counting my breaths.

“Because someone’s got to, right?”

I looked down at the tiled floor of the shopping mall.

“He’s a real mess, Ky.”

“I know,” I whispered.

“Never thought you’d do something like that.”

I nodded.

“I just don’t understand.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Tayla looked at her cell phone. I looked at my feet.

We parted without another word being said.
