“D’you want to know what I have planned for today?” he asked.

“Okay, but do I have a say?”

“Hear me out before you comment, okay?”

She nodded.

“Breakfast down in the restaurant, then a romantic scenic trip down the Seine with lunch provided on board. Later, back here where I have booked you in for a pamper session. Tonight, I’m taking you to a discreet and special kind of adult club, where you will wear your gorgeous red dress.”

“Adult club?” she asked faintly. Images of naked women strung up on crosses being flogged came to mind. Did she want to spend her anniversary night in such a place?

“Not a BDSM club, if that’s what you’re thinking. No, this is a particular type of classy adult club, with dancing and an erotic floor show.”

She took a gulp of her fizz. Something bumped against her lips.

“Careful!” he warned.

She peered into the remains of her drink.

“There’s something metal in my glass,” she said.

Fishing with her index finger down at the bottom of her flute, Penny hooked out a ring and laid it on her palm.

“David?”

He handed her a tissue. She wiped the sticky residue off the metal band. It was a gold wedding ring with a small bright cut diamond set in the centre. Tears filled her eyes. She raised her gaze to meet his smile.

He took the ring and threaded it onto her wedding finger then lifted her hand to his lips.

“I love you, Mrs. Forrester. Will you remain my wife for the rest of our lives until death do us part?” His husky voice conveyed his depth of emotion, leaving her in no doubt his words came from the heart.

She leant into him, placing her forehead to his.

“I am yours, forever and ever,” she responded solemnly.

He kissed her possessively, rolled her back onto the bed, and took his time loving her until she’d cried out his name more than once.

They were late downto breakfast. To Penny’s astonishment the waiters were welcoming and not at all condescending, which she’d expected, since most of the waiters they’d encountered in Paris so far had been more than a little patronizing.

Holding out her hand, she spread her fingers and admired her ring. Not until now had she truly believed David was her husband, her man, yet now she wore his ring.

My daddy...

Firmly, she banished the small pleading voice in her head. They were husband and wife, however that strange anomaly came about. The whole age-play thing is irresponsible, she reprimanded.

“Euro for them?”

“What?” She stared at her husband blankly.

“You know, the English expression, ‘Penny for your thoughts’? Except we are in Europe, so, a euro for them,” he explained. “You were miles away,” he added.

She smiled. “Kilometres away, don’t forget we’re in Europe!”

He tapped the end of her nose. “Cheeky monkey... ready to go?”

“Yup.”
