Penny nodded, too choked with emotion to speak.

Allie squeezed her shoulders and stood up. “I’m going to make more coffee, and then you can fill me in on where you’re at with winning your man, and we can make a plan of campaign.”

Once seated comfortably, they discussed their plan.

“So my idea is to back up your story by introducing David to a fictitious Karen, fictitious Mike’s ex-girlfriend,” Allie explained.

Penny nodded. “Okay, I see where you’re going with this. By doing that, we are giving the lie some validation.”

“Now all I need to do is phone him.”

Penny agreed. “Let’s do it!”

Chapter Ten

There was no denyingit, his business weekend had been a complete disaster. David slapped the steering wheel. Damn Penny, that young woman had ruined the whole expensive trip. He’d booked a very exclusive country house hotel so he could schmooze a wealthy client the firm needed. As much as he’d tried to keep his attention on work, Penny constantly invaded his thoughts. Even to the extent that he needed a cold shower to turn his thoughts away from her. What kind of a man did that over a young woman who trusted him like her brother?

“A low-down heel, that’s what,” he snarled.

His phone buzzed. A text message from Penny was read aloud by the electronic voicemail. It told him the stray dog had been reunited with the pet’s owner. He dictated a brief acknowledgement. Perhaps now he could put Penny out of his mind and get on with his week.

As soon as he arrived at his office, he asked Sharne to order a bouquet of flowers and have them sent to his client. He felt like a complete jerk lusting after innocent little Penny, and he didn’t like it, not one bit. She deserved better.

He threw himself into his day, but the image of a sweetly impish face with large green eyes kept invading his thoughts. Still, before he knew it, it was five o’clock. Sharne told him she was leaving for the day and switched the phones through to his office. He had a least two more hours of work to complete before he planned on leaving. Deep into spreadsheet analysis, he cursed when the phone buzzed.

“David Forrester,” he snapped.

“Hello, Mr. Forrester, you don’t know me, but I understand that you are looking out for a mutual friend of ours, Penny West?”

He frowned; now what? “Well, I wouldn’t exactly say I was looking out for her... I’m sorry and you are?”

“Karen Mulligan, I was Mike’s girlfriend. He spoke highly of you.”

“Oh. Hello. I’m sorry for your loss, Miss Mulligan.”

“Karen, please.”
