“I don’t have a daddy,” was all she could think of to say.

Penny noticed how David’s eyes flashed to meet his friend’s, and Mark raised his eyebrows back. Penny couldn’t read their hidden conversation.

“I think milkshakes and cookies are in order. The puppies are up and tumbling. It’s okay for you to play with them now,” Mark informed them.

“I want cranberry juice,” Emily pouted.

“Then my princess shall have cranberry,” Mark replied indulgently.

Penny stared, guessing the other woman liked to play the brat.

She knelt with a puppyasleep on her lap and another lively little terror attached to the edge of her tee shirt, tugging the cloth with tiny white razor-sharp teeth.

“I love these two most of all,” Penny told David.

“That placid little girl on your knee seems to love cuddles. I think she would be best suited to our needs,” he said.

Warmth spread through her veins at the words our needs. She beamed at him.

“Can we have this one, D-David?”I nearly slipped up and called him Daddy again.

“You do understand it will be three to four weeks before you can take your puppy home, Penny? Unlike some other disreputable folk, I want our puppies to stay with their mother as long as possible for their social development and mental stability. Too many people separate puppies at eight weeks old and that is far too young,” Mark called. He was seated on a recliner with Emily on his lap; she also cuddled a puppy. She’d been pleading with Mark to allow her to keep it.

Penny privately thought that Mark had already decided he was going to give in to her, but enjoyed his wife’s pleading. The man’s eyes shone with affection whenever he looked at Emily; it was plain to Penny that he loved his little wife very much.

“How do you remember which puppy is ours?” David asked, rising to his feet.

“I have a permanent marker which I use to mark the fur. I give each person a number and note the number against the name of the potential owner,” Mark explained.

“But the ink could poison Honey!” Penny interjected.

“Honey?” David asked, bemused.

“I’m assured by the vet that this is a safe ink for them, sweetheart. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t use anything that would harm the puppies,” Mark reassured her.

“Honey?” David asked again.

“Honey is our puppy’s name,” Penny explained.

“Don’t I get a say? Especially since I’m paying for her...”

“No, you’re not. Honey is a gift to a friend.” Mark interrupted. “I’m pleased she is going to you and not to some stranger. Emily and I want all the puppies to go to good homes with people we trust.”

“Thanks, mate, I don’t know what to say,” David said gruffly.

“I do! Thank you both so much. I’ve had such a lovely afternoon,” Penny assured her new friends.

“You must come and play again!” Emily exclaimed. Penny nodded enthusiastically. It was wonderful to have found people who understood her.

She glanced across at David from under her lashes. He was looking across at Mark. Did he understand the whole age-play concept? If he did, then what on earth had he been doing with confident, sexy businesswomen like the one Emily had described his last girlfriend to be?

“You’ll bring Penny over again won’t you, Uncle David?” Emily pressed. The men appeared to miss the wink she flashed at Penny.

“Yes, Emily, I certainly will. We’ll want to come back to visit you and Mark, and get to know our puppy,” he replied with a smile.
