Chapter Twelve

They drove toward Hampsteadin silence. Glancing surreptitiously across at David’s face, Penny couldn’t read anything into his blank expression.

After a while he cleared his throat.

She turned hopefully.

“What’s your address?” was all he asked.

“200 Southwood Road,” she replied, not offering any further conversation.

He nodded and continued to drive until they turned onto her street. There was no parking space outside the property, but David managed to park three doors down. He switched off the engine. “Did your brother know you needed a daddy in your life?” he asked.

Her mind raced. What to say? She knew this man really well in her previous life, but this David seemed more mercurial than her husband had been, which made reading him difficult on occasions like now.

“I think he did, yes,” she replied, giving what she hoped was a safe response.

“I see.”

She waited for him to say more but when he failed to speak, she made her thanks and reached for the door.

“Hey.”

She turned at the sound of his gruff voice. To her surprise he leaned in and kissed her once, lightly on the mouth.

“So, you’re a little?” he asked softly.

“Mm-hm.” Words failed her; she was in shock at his kiss, however chaste.

“Ever had a daddy before?” His hand moved to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers stroking a stray curl.

“I did once, but I-I lost him,” she stuttered. What’s happening?

“Lost him?” he chuckled. “Was it a platonic relationship?”

She shook her head. “No. I’m a fully grown woman. I like sex.”

She watched his amazing blue eyes dilate at that.I really wish I knew what he was thinking.A frisson of excitement stirred low in her belly.
