Cute Meet

Prologue - Ellie

“Favoritepizzatopping?”Heasks, one eyebrow raised.

Without hesitation, I answer truthfully. “My all-time favorite is pineapple.”

His lips turn up with exaggerated disgust and he draws back from me slightly. I squeeze my lips tight to hold the laughter that is threatening to burst from me.

With a twinkle in his eyes and a playful smirk on his face, he rises out of his seat and shakes his head. “I’m sorry, Ellie. I can’t be friends with someone whose favorite pizza topping ispineapple.” He shivers like he’s repulsed by the word. “It’s a shame too because I was really starting to like you…”

I giggle at his bogus outrage and the fact that he hasn’t moved at all to walk away, then pull his arm so he falls back down into his chair with athud. “Sit down, you big dork.”

He lets out a hearty laugh, andthat laugh, so joyful and uninhibited, speaks straight to my heart.

I could have never guessed when I walked into this room a few hours ago for our college freshman mixer, so overwhelmed and nervous to start this new chapter in my life, thatthiswould be how my day would end. My cheeks are sore from laughing so much with a stranger who feels like he’s lived in my soul forever. A stranger who already knows more about me and dreams than I’ve ever shared with anyone else, and one who has offered me a look into his genuine heart and hopes for his future too.

As his amusement radiates from his body, I smile in awe at his tan Hispanic skin, perfectly styled jet black hair, broad shoulders that command a room’s attention, and his long crossed legs that stick out from the chairs without a care in the world.

His curious hazel eyes, eyes that draw me in like a moth to the light, narrow as his laughter fades away. With as serious a face as he can muster, he asks, “Favorite animal?”

I place my hand on my chin, searching for an answer that will guarantee me the gift of his laughter again.

“Unicorns!” I declare proudly. He stares at me blankly and I force my lips to stay flat again, although the strain is making them quiver. “What?” I ask casually. “They’re beautiful and magical and the word on the street is that they poop glitter. What’s not to love?” I shrug and offer a pleased smile.

“Unicorns?!Unicorns?!You’re killing me, blondie. First with the pineapples, and now with the unicorns. I just don’t know what I’m going to do with you.”

He dramatically smacks his hand to his forehead and thepopbreaks the dam. I throw my head back in a fit of laughter, and a few seconds later I once again hear the sound I’m already so addicted to.

My belly is aching as our merriment settles down. The air between us shifts as he lowers his gaze to my lips.

Is he going to kiss me?

I realize the mischief that’s lived in his eyes since we met is now a longing that I haven’t seen before.

He leans over the arms of our chairs and lowers himself down to me until he sits a few inches from my face. I stare at him with wide eyes as I wait to see what he'll do.

“I feel like I’ve known you my whole life,” he says with a heavy breath. He's looking into my eyes with a significance that feels brand new.

“I feel the same about you,” I force out, even though my throat has gone completely dry.

Our eyes still locked in silence, he whispers, “I want to kiss you…”

“I want you to kiss me…”

Not sparing another moment, he closes the distance between us, and our lips meet. My eyes fall shut as goosebumps spread on my skin and the butterflies that have lived in my stomach since I met him take flight. A need I’ve never known before rises in me and I can’t get close enough to him, so I wrap my arms around his neck to pull him even closer to me. Time stands still as his lips explore mine.

After what feels like an eternity and a second simultaneously, he pulls back from me with wide eyes and swollen lips and clears his throat. I unthread my arms, then run my fingers over my lips as they grieve the loss of his touch and I try to catch my breath.

As if suddenly remembering where we are, we both look around to see we’re now alone in a quiet common room. It's just him and I, lost in each other.

This guy has just captured my heart… and I'm certain I never want him to give it back.
