With his final instruction, I grab hold of the window frame and hoist my legs into the seat. As I lower myself down, it’s becoming abundantly clear that this car wasn’t built for a man of my size. My knees are centimeters from the steering column and my head is practically grazing the ceiling, but none of that could stop me now. I plant my ass down and it all hits me at once: the cold plastic of the seat and the metal safety bars next to my ears, the smell of fuel and oil wafting around me, the roar of the engine as Jim leans in and starts the car up, the open road of the track ahead of me calling my name. I can taste the adrenaline coursing through my body.

Jim is going over the specifics again, but my mind is already lost down that track. “Got it?”

“Yup!” I shout over the engine.

“You’re good to go then. Be safe and have fun.”

He steps back and I give one final look to my beautiful wife. She’s bouncing up and down in the pit and her smile fuels my excitement even more. My foot cautiously presses down on the gas as I grip the steering wheel tight. The surge of power under me equally surprises me and spurs me on even more, so I floor it.

“Oh my god!!!”I shout into the abyss as thrill runs through my veins. I make my way around the first bend and floor it again on the straight-away. My pulse is so loud, I can hear it in my ears over the engine.

This is fucking amazing!!

The next eight minutes fly by as I lean into the curves and push the car for all it has to give. I’m drunk on power as I slow into the pit.

After cutting the engine and untangling my lengthy body from the car, I run up to Ellie who’s waiting for me on the side of the track jumping up and down. I pick her up and swing her around. She lets out a yelp and starts giggling as I squeeze her.

“So?! Tell me everything!!” she says as I set her down on the ground.

“Hell, that was amazing! I’ve never felt so alive! Thank you so much for planning this.” I scatter kisses across her cheeks and down her neck, my body still buzzing. “I love you so much.”

Through giggles, she says, “I’m so glad you loved it! I took tons of pictures and videos. The kids will be so excited.”

“I can’t wait to show them.” I grab her hand as we make our way back to the office to check out.

“You did what today?!” Jonathan shouts, accidentally spitting his broccoli out when I tell him about my day at the dinner table.

The kids all start shooting questions at me.Where did you go? What was it like? Did you get to wear one of those helmets with the radio in them? Did you meet a real race car driver?

I laugh as I take them all in. “One at a time. One at a time. Oldest to youngest tonight. Johnny, you’re up.”

“How fast did you go?” he asks with curious eyes.

“Well, the cars don’t have speedometers in them so it’s hard to know for sure. I’d guess around hundred-fifty miles per hour. I’ve gone up to hundred and ten in my patrol truck and I know I was going way faster than that today.”

Over dinner, I answer all their questions. Their excitement is contagious as I relive the experience again vicariously through their joy.

When it’s time to tuck them in, I’m still on a high so I don’t even care that I’m readingJanie Goes to the FarmandRace Cars in the Rainfor the ten billionth time.

Ellie is on our bed lotioning her arms and legs when I walk into our bedroom. I pause to take her in. The sheen of her soft skin makes my heart skip a beat and she catches me staring at her.

“What?” She asks with raised eyebrows.

“Nothing. You’re so beautiful, that’s all.”

She blushes. “Thank you.”

“Are you going to shower with me?” I ask.

“Since I took a quick one this morning, I’m good. Are you up to doing a prompt tonight? I know you had a busy day and I think that counts as a date if you want to skip it.”

“Nah, I’m good for one. It’ll probably help calm me down. I’m still all hyped.”

She giggles.“Sounds good. Hopefully, the shower helps too.”

After showering and getting ready for bed, I slip under the covers with her. “Hit me. What’s the topic today, dear?If you could be an animal, which would it be?” I joke.

“A little deeper.” She opens the page she has earmarked. “What’s your greatest insecurity?”
