Page 76 of Making Time for Us

“Shouldn’t we wait for the doctor to clear you?” She bites her smile and the worry on her face makes my stomach clench.

“Tell you what? How about we just fool around?” I wiggle my eyebrows menacingly and she giggles in my arms.

“I really am fine waiting. It’s only another week.”

She reaches her hand up to cup my cheek and I lean into it. The heat of her hand makes me crave her touch even more.

“Well, I’m not,” I bite back.

Wide-eyed, she draws back enough for there to be space between us but not separate our bodies. “Why not? This isn’t like you to be so…I don’t even know but I know something is off here.” I stay silent, not sure I should say what I think out loud. “Marco? Tell me what’s wrong.” I continue to stare at her and her tone softens. “Marco… you can tell me anything, you know that.” She brings her hand back to my cheek again and I close my eyes and lean into her warmth. “Marco, what’s really going on?”

“I don’t want you to be unhappy again,” I whisper and open my eyes to see the confused look on her face. “I don’t want to go back to us going with the motions again and forgetting about each other. I want us to stay a priority, but you keep pulling away from me.”

Her confusion is clear. “Unhappyagain? When was I unhappy?”

“A little over a month ago, when you told me you were.”

She places her hands on my chest and stares up at me with tenderness. “Oh, love. I’m so sorry you ever thought I was unhappy. That wasneverthe case. You have made me happyevery daysince the very first day I met you sixteen years ago.” Her gentle sincere eyes bore into my soul. “I love you so much and I love being your wife. When I thought I lost you…” She shakes her head. “A month or two ago, I just realized that we were at a point in our marriage where we needed to putusback at the top of the priority list. We needed to make time for us if we wanted to really know each other in this stage of our life. I have had the most amazing time rediscovering our love and who we are to each other. And I want to do it again and again until death does us part.” She smiles at me again and I melt. “You are my soulmate, the love of my life, my best friend, and I’m so grateful I get to do this life with you.”

I clear my throat. “I just don’t want to go back to how it was before, you know? You’ve barely even touched me in weeks, and it feels like we’re slipping back into the old ways.”

“That’s my fault. I let my fear convince me I would make you worse somehow. You just looked so hurt and I was scared. I wanted to touch you every day. I’ve missed our closeness. And the new amazing sex has been missed too.” She winks at me.

“Babe, it’s always been amazing because I’m with you.”

Her cheeks pink up and she smiles. “I just missed that in all the years that went by without all the passion. Does that make sense?”

“Yeah, I'm glad we found it again, even though I didn't know it was missing.” I smile down at her and there’s a peace flowing between us that's been absent for weeks.

“I know we will always come back to each other though. These last couple of weeks have been so hard for us but we’re still standing. Sometimes there’s no avoiding just going with the motions, but wealwayscome back to each other. I will always come back to you.” I place my forehead on hers and breathe her in for a couple of seconds before she pulls away again. “It’s like when I was pregnant and we had tiny babies, that shit was hard but at the end of the day, I knew we had each other. Just like we do now, I’m right here. I love you so much, Marco. So muchand you make mesohappy. Always have.”

“I love you more, Ellie.” I lean down and press my lips to hers aggressively.

“Not even possible.” She giggles.

“Oh yeah? Do you need me to show you how much more I love you?” I wiggle my eyebrows and I slap her behind and she lets out a little yelp that makes me laugh.

“I want you to show me!” She wiggles out of my arms and runs into the house.

I follow behind her, but when I hit the button to close the garage door, the beeping alerts me to the two-by-four that’s laying on the threshold. I quickly run to kick it back in the garage, then press the button to close it again.

When I finally get inside, she’s standing in the kitchen butt naked with one arm across her chest, and the other covering her bush. My jaw hits the floor as I stare at her gorgeous body before making my way back up to the deliciously wicked grin on her face.

“Admit it. I love you more," she says with a challenge in her eyes.

My mouth salivates as my thoughts stumble over each other. “Never.”

She lowers her arm a tiny bit so only a sliver of her nipples are peaking out behind them. “Are you sure? If you just admit that I love you more we can end this little game right now and find something better to do with our morning.”

Keeping my hands to myself, I take a step toward her and stare at her beautiful face.

“Ellie?” I choke out.

“Yes?” she says, mischief dancing in those sparkling blues.

I lean in a few inches from her face and whisper into her ear, “¿Donde esta la biblioteca?”

Her bravado slips as her head rolls backward with her laughter. I take the opportunity to pounce. Wrapping my hands around her waist and pulling her in, she uncrosses her arms and reaches up to pull me closer to her.
