Actually, that was Birdie’s parental M.O. but that wasn’t the point. She was sure he was making Mia feel shitty. Just like he did her, years ago.

Small, inconsequential, and then during the latter years, immoral.

To a degree she was, but that wasn’t the point.

“Then please give me his home address.”

“I’m sorry, I’m sure you can understand that a man of his level of importance to the community wouldn’t allow just anybody to have his personal information.”

Just anybody.

Don’t lose your shit, Birdie. You’re not that person anymore. You’re a grown-ass woman. A professional business woman with a successful company… that’s been recently fired…

Oh, fuck it.

“This is an urgent and private matter. Trust me when I tell you that he’s going to want to see me, and now.”

“Then you don’t need his address.”

“Why not?” she asked through clenched teeth.

“Because he’s not at home. He’s downstairs conducting a meeting with the town council members.”

“Why didn’t you say that in the first place?”

“You didn’t ask where he was, you asked for his home address.”

“You said he wasn’t here.”

“And he’s not, he’s downstairs.”

“Isn’t it odd to conduct a council meeting on the weekend?”

“Not if your council members hold full-time jobs outside of their civic duties.”

Birdie lifted an eyebrow. Well played.

“And you’re here because…”

“I’m the mayor’s personal assistant. Therefore, when he’s conducting Saturday morning council meetings, I’m here to assist.”

The admin/gatekeeper/minion continued, after giving Birdie a good once-over. “But I’d be happy to take you to see him, personally.”

“Oh, well, yes, thank you.”

The woman rose from her chair. “It’s nothing. Follow me. Closely,” she said, sashaying out the door and looking comparatively well put together, despite yards of ruffles around her neckline and hem.

While the woman made her way down the cavernous stairwell, she turned toward Birdie. “My name is Lilith. And yours?”

She looked young. Too young to know of Birdie’s sordid past and the unfortunate incident that occurred between her and the woman’s anal-retentive boss. “I’m Birdie.”

The woman came to an abrupt stop halfway down the stairwell, causing Birdie to nearly collide into her, sending them both sprawling.

“Birdie? You’retheBirdie Wellborn?”

Well, shit. It appeared her reputation preceded her.

This couldn’t be good. She needed to apprehend Mia and get the hell out of Wayward.
