“You had your Taser? All this time?” Birdie asked as they skipped over the still twitching guard, a wet spot emerging on the man’s pants as the smell of urine permeated the air.

“I was waiting for a precipitous moment. I believe,” he said looking at Mia. “I gauged it well.”

She couldn’t argue with that.

Flynn grabbed the back of the guard’s collar and dragged the man’s stunned body into the bedroom, finding the key in his pocket and locking the door behind him as Mia pulled on Birdie’s arm. “There are guards at most exits. No one at the front door. If we distract them, Flynn can tase them until we make our way to the basement and to Dad.”

“How many?” Flynn asked.

“I passed three.”

“I’m afraid I’m going to have to insist that you ladies stay here and allow me to handle distracting and incapacitating the guards.”

Birdie started to argue, “No way—”

“I’m afraid I’m going to have to insist. You are under my care. My charges. A responsibility bestowed upon me by my employer. Besides, the guards don’t have orders to guard me, just you, Birdie. And Mia is a child, and should be protected at all costs.”

Birdie chewed on her lip. “Okay.” She prayed she wouldn’t regret this. Handing over control was not one of her strengths. But she couldn’t argue with his logic.

Then again… “Let’s compromise. We follow you, but stay hidden as you incapacitate each guard. That way, we progress together, but with myself and Mia safely in the shadows.”

“I agree with that stratagem as long as you remain hidden, waiting for my cue.”

Mia interrupted, “I hate to tell you this, but while you two were negotiating the Paris Peace Accords, a new guard is now posted up at the front door.”

“Oh, dear,” Birdie said. “Let’s get started then.”

Flynn turned to her, his expression serious and commanding. “Don’t come down the staircase until you hear him hit the ground. The effects last about fifteen minutes so we must make haste.”

Birdie held Mia close as Flynn sauntered down the staircase as if he owned the place.

Huddling at the top of the stairs, Birdie held Mia tight as she heard Flynn say, “Sir, might you have a cigarette I could bum off of you? Ah, yes. Excellent brand. I feel like a Marlboro Man already. Just let me get my lighter…”

The next thing they heard was the telltale sounds of a tased man, similar to the previous victim, falling to the floor and moaning.

Birdie led the way as she and Mia scurried down the steps to Flynn, who was standing flat against a side wall. Except for his distended belly.

“Next?” he said, looking at Mia.

“Kitchen. Side door.”

He nodded. “Stay here.”

A couple minutes later, they heard the electrical clicking noise and the man fall. Then, they were at the foot of the stairs to the basement.

Mia said, “The next one is downstairs. Waiting on the doctor and guarding Dad’s door. I was able to get past him because he and another guy were strapping him to a table.”

Birdie’s heart was pounding. “Which room is your dad in?”

“It’s the one around the corner, second door on the right.” Birdie was confused. Mia added, “It’s the room where Dad stored some of Pearl’s stuff. When she went to stay at the assisted living facility.”

While Birdie and Mia stayed back at the corner, Flynn attempted the same scam. Asking for a smoke and tasing the guy as if he were pulling out his lighter but instead pointing a pink Taser at him.

Within seconds, the three of them were in the room with a wide-eyed and squirming Lucas. Birdie ran to him untying his gag while Mia and Flynn worked on his restraints.

As soon as the gag was released, Lucas sat up, his eyes narrowed on Flynn. “I told you to get them out of the house.”

Birdie explained, “It’s my fault. I refused to leave without you.”
