“Dad!” They all turned toward Mia, staring down at her flip phone. “We can argue about this later. We’ve only got eight minutes to get out of the house before the first tased guard comes around.”

After stepping over the twitching and drooling guard, Birdie took one arm and Flynn the other as they dragged him into the room and locked it. Flynn led the way with Mia behind him as Birdie put her shoulder under Lucas to help him walk. He had been roughed up and finding it difficult to stand straight.

They made it up the basement stairs and back into the kitchen where the other guard was still incapacitated and going on about how he was burning from the inside out.

Flynn and Mia managed to gag him and pull him into the pantry and closed the door after his feet knocked over a plastic container of dry pasta.

Mia shoved one of the metal kitchen chair legs over the lever door handle, to keep the door wedged tight if someone tried to open it from the other side.

“Where did you learn that?”

“Angus. He used to make me watch reruns of Taggert after school. A Scottish cop show.”

They made their way to the front entrance, where they took the time to gag and drag the last guard into the coat closet. Birdie, this time, wedging a straight-back chair under the doorknob, American-style.

A trick she used to keep an unhinged Shelby Wellborn from getting to her when she was going off the rails.

They all turned simultaneously toward one another. Taking a second to bask in their accomplishment before tackling what lay outside the front door.

As Flynn reached out to turn the knob, one step closer to freedom, it swung open instead, causing them all to gasp and step back.

Birdie’s heart sank as Errol and Ariana, behind them the Pinkie Posse, walked through the door.

Unfortunately, Errol reacted quicker than Flynn and his Taser, lifting a hand-gun and pointing it toward them.

“Ariana, darling, it looks as though we have impeccable timing.”
