“Why? What did you have in mind, Mr. Mayor?”

“You, me, some nonalcoholic beverages, and reading a new chapter inWhat to Expect When You’re Expecting.”

“Ohhh, you really know how to romance a girl.”

“Hey, I’ve got moves.”

“Yes, you do.” She kissed him on the neck and rubbed up against him. “I’ve seen your moves.”

God, he loved this woman. He hated to let her go.

Funny how he tried to distance himself from her for years and now hated every moment apart from her. Life was crazy.

She instantly went into busy mode, cleaning up the remnants from lunch, giving him one more kiss and bolting out of the office to check on one of the construction sites before going home to fix dinner.

Lucas watched his longtime friend and wife dart to her car and drive off, thinking how he couldn’t have wished for a better life, full of family and one irrepressible woman.

He moved to the corner of the room and sat in his mangled relic of a chair. He didn’t have the heart to dispose of the damn thing. He didn’t know why. Not only had he never gotten rid of the chair, he also never got it repaired. Instead, he propped it up in the corner and sat in it every once in a while. Usually when he was feeling nostalgic. Maybe a little sentimental.

Like today. After a few minutes, he looked down at the tufts of stuffing dotting his pants, making it look as though he’d sat in cat hair. And the reason he kept a lint roller in his desk.

In a way, the chair represented how some things were worth keeping around and cherishing despite the risk and potential for loss. And by embracing the risk, rather than avoiding it, he played the odds, ending up with an indescribably rich life.

Far beyond the dollar amount sitting in his bank account.

The End
