She couldn’t hold back and reached up and ran her fingers through his hair, something she had watched him do a million times since third grade. Usually, when she had called him names, ticked him off and then, during the later years, when blatant concern and anxiety was etched all over his body at yet another one of her antics.

“Nothing’s changed, Bird.”

What did that mean? He still hated her? Loved her? Wanted to muzzle her?

“Stop thinking,” he said as if reading her mind. “I’m here because I want to be with you. You. Under any circumstances. You’ve been so much a part of me for as long as I can remember, I don’t know where I end and you begin. It’s always been that way. Even all those years when you were gone, it was like we were still somehow tethered to one another. I’m here because I don’t ever want to spend another day away from you. For once, rather than fight it, can we please just fucking go with it?”

“Okay,” she whispered, mesmerized by the words coming out of his mouth at the same time fidgeting, eager for him to get closer.

He smiled, and two dimples appeared. Her heart flip-flopped just like it used to, for as far back as she could remember. When he walked into the schoolyard, waiting for her to call him names and pounce.

Then, years later, when they sat at Bernadette’s kitchen table doing homework, their bodies humming with their innocent proximity, trying to make sense of all these new and budding feelings.

During high school, when she pulled away from him to protect him from an unhinged mother, vengeful sister, and her lackluster reputation, while at the same time searching for unhealthy ways to maintain some level of attention from him.

There was no denying Lucas Santos was the love of her life. It’s just that life got in the way and kept them from ever happening.

His fingers began to move down her neck, pulling away from her long enough to remove his sweatshirt and then the nightgown. Bringing her toward his chest, he pulled the bedding back so her spine fell against cool sheets.

With her naked and vulnerable except for scant panties, his warm tongue landed on her nipple and sucked it into his mouth. She wedged her lips together as he let go. Then the other. After coaxing both nipples into points, he began kissing down her stomach as his hands opened her legs for him.

She knew she was drenched. Had been since she first walked into the room. It was both embarrassing and insightful how much this man affected her both mentally and physically. And now, she was writhing around the sheets in anticipation as he stared at her.

He rubbed his thumb against the wet silk with almost a heady grin. “You’re so wet for me.”

She chewed the side of her lip waiting, her fingernails digging into the bedding.

He pulled back the thin scrap of material between her legs, the first pass of his tongue almost making her scream and eliciting a pained groan from him.

Even though this wasn’t the first time she had been with him, it was the first time with all her secrets exposed. Nothing to hide from. Everything front and center. And yet, he still wanted her. Despite everything.

“You taste so fucking good.” He paused to nip at her clit, and she swore she saw constellations on the ceiling above her and slammed her eyes shut as he made another pass.

She managed to open her weighted eyelids to peek at a debauched Lustful Lucas, his five o’clock shadow doing the most sinful things to the most sensitive part of her body, his olive skin glistening from the streaks of light coming from the window, making him appear all the more dreamy and ethereal.

Dropping her head on the pillow, she kept shifting her hips with the onslaught of his marauding tongue. Licking her, his fingers pulling her farther open, his tongue plunging into her as she squirmed.

“Look at me, Bird.”

Raising her head and managing to lean on her elbows, she gave him her full attention.

“Promise me you won’t leave again.”

There was no way she could promise that. She didn’t know what might happen, the potential threats to him if she weren’t smart and ready to run.

“Promise me that whatever happens, we do this together. If we’re ever to have a chance at a future, I need you to promise me this.”

She reared her head back in frustration. “You know I can’t do that.”

His mouth engulfed her. Giving her open-mouth kisses and then pushing his masterful tongue inside of her, kissing her most sensitive parts, raw and raggedly. Finesse didn’t matter, gentlemen pursuits thrown out the hotel window.

He devoured her.

Moaning and holding on to the back of his head, she undulated into his mouth, helping him to get deeper to kiss filthier.

“I promise,” she blurted rather inelegantly, her will breaking at the magic he was making with one other-worldly tongue lashing.

He paused long enough to add, “Say you promise to never leave me.”
