“I would have done the same thing.” I shrug, looking at her. “Remember when you first showed off your bow and arrow skills to me?”

She laughs. “Yeah. All you did was practice for a month. You only started hanging out with me again because I let you beat me.”

“Let me beat you? Ha! I won fair and square.” My hand rests on her foot, giving it a squeeze. I missed this calmness she makes me feel. My mind wonders back to when we used to be friends. We had this competition between us that drove me to become the best at almost everything.

She abruptly stands. My hands fumble with my popcorn, and it spills on the floor. “We’re not friends anymore, Fin.” Her invisible shield is back up, and I want nothing more than to tear it down.

“I can’t do this. I’m going home.”

I catch her wrist in my hand. I wanted to wait to tell her, but I no longer have a choice. “This is your home now.” Her hand jerks in my hold. “Your place was broken into. Everything was destroyed. The only thing they didn’t do was set it on fire.”

I wait for her to soften and accept my comfort. Her eyes don’t widen, and her muscles don’t jerk.

She already knows.

“You know?” Her lips purse, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with me. “Who wants you dead?” Just the idea of someone hunting her has my neck muscles straining.

“I don’t have friends, Fin. My death would bring a smile to everyone’s face but my family’s.”

“No, the break-in was personal. It has nothing to do with a contract kill.” Her pulse quickens against the pads of my fingers. “You’re not leaving this place. Not until we have eliminated whoever wants you dead.”

She rips her wrist from my hold. “I will not be a prisoner,” Luna responds firmly.

I don’t want that either. I want her to let me help. “Think of this as my way of saying sorry for shooting you with an arrow. Unless you want to return to your parents’ house?”

I watch her body shift, and I know I have her. No one wants to move back in with their parents after they leave.

“I’m only staying because I have no place to go.”

Chapter 10

Luna

Iwakeuptohim cooking me breakfast… half naked.

“Morning, sunshine,” he greets, all smiles and cheery voice.

“I hope your sunshine gets shoved up your ass,” I grumble.

I don’t do mornings.

I huff and stand, my muscles sore from the hardness of the murphy bed. I made Fin sleep on the couch. “Please say you have coffee.”

His deep chuckle vibrates across the room as he points to the already made pot. I expected him to be moody, with a permanent scowl across his handsome face, from the rumors I’ve heard about him and how his life has gone. But nope. He’s as perky as a sixteen-year-old girl who just sprouted boobs.

I walk over and pour myself a large cup. Its bitterness coats my tongue, but I welcome its warmth.

He’s smiling at me, and I lift a brow in question.

“You have not changed.” He shakes his head in disbelief.

I could say the same thing about him, but I remain silent.

It’sbeenthemostuneventful day of my life. I want to rip my hair out. He’s trying to kill me slowly from boredom. The old Fin I knew used to be fun. This one likes to binge on TV shows or workout. There’s nothing in between. And the two of us are stuck here.

“Want a drink?” I ask. If I’m going to be bored out of my mind, I might as well get drunk.

“I don’t drink,” he replies, his eyes not moving from the TV screen.
