I open his cabinets to check out his liquor supply. He has vodka, gin, and rum. I pour myself a gin and juice. It goes down smooth. So smooth I almost consider adding more gin to it. Immediately, an idea flashes in my mind, and I know how I’m going to get away from Fin.

Taking out a cup, I pour him juice with just enough vodka that he won’t taste it. With Fin being allergic, it won’t take long before he feels the effects. In no time, he’ll pass out, and I’ll be free to go on my way.

Walking over to him, I take a seat, placing my feet over him while shoving his drink in front of his face. “Here’s some boring juice.”

I focus my attention on the chick flick he picked.Seriously, does he not know who I am? Out of the corner of my eye, I watch as the glass touches his lips. I stop breathing in anticipation. His throat bobs, and I know he’s had a sip. I wait for him to react, my pulse double thudding.

“Thank you. It’s refreshing. I don’t remember the last time I drank anything other than water.”

Trying to act normal, I give him a small smile. “You’re welcome.”

My stomach continues to flip-flop. Each second that passes, I think of a hundred different things I could be doing. I force my hands to stop trying to wiggle. The only way it’s possible is to bring my drink to my lips, and I take a big gulp.

My eyes go to the movie, one of his sister’s favorites.I wonder if he knows that.

I take another sip to focus on not letting my eyes tear up. I remember sitting on her bed, saying my rehearsed lies. Explaining that I overheard my father telling someone that her father was a rat. Then me, paying off the cops to search their house and planting the evidence that was needed. I had no idea it would cause her death and Fin to sink into himself so deep that we could no longer be friends. I don’t deserve his protection or his kindness. I’m nothing like the girl I once was. The faster he realizes this, the easier it will be.

Fin has finished half his glass of vodka and juice. I’m adding another reason for him to hate me. I want to feel the loathing.

“I’d understand if you don’t want to do this whole bodyguard thing my brother set up.” I’m hoping he’ll take the easy out.

“I’m a man who keeps his word,” he gruffly replies, finishing off the drink.

“Want another? I’m going to make myself one.”

His eyes stay on the movie while he hands me his empty glass. “Thanks.”

In less than two hours, I’m slightly tipsy, and Fin is snoring on the couch with the movie’s credits scrolling on the screen. He actually thought I’d enjoy that shitty romantic comedy. He’s forgotten all about how we used to only watch action and thrillers together.

I dig through my bag and pull out a long, slutty black dress that plunges between my breasts. Slipping it over my head, I check out all of my angles in front of the mirror. It has three triangle cutouts that expose my toned stomach. Then there are slits on each side, showing off my legs. The black material has a slight twinkle to it, small silver specks that shine all the way to my toes. It’s over-the-top sexy.

Damn, if Fin was awake, he’d enjoy this one. His loss. I stop and stare at him in the mirror behind me. His fingers twitch a little, but otherwise, he stays sleeping.

I thought it would be harder to give him the slip. I’m overwhelmed with disappointment, and it catches me off guard. Immediately, I bottle it up.

Walking to Fin, I bend down, pressing my lips to his forehead. He really is a gorgeous creature of the night. In the daylight, he looks just as lethal, but he reminds me more of who he used to be. With a sigh, I go to buckle my heels and leave the house of no fun—but not before hiding a few small guns on me. I strap one to my hip that’s rest just above my dress slit and place another one in my clutch. I hate to leave home with fewer than three guns, but with this dress, it really limits my options.

Fin

LunamustthinkI’mstupid. I miss nothing. I allowed her to think I was downing the three vodka drinks she made me. Knowing Luna better than herself, I planted a vodka bottle filled with water in my cabinet. She didn’t even question why I would have a bottle of it if I’m allergic. It’s not like I have friends coming over. To get her back, I had her watch one of her most hated movies. I’m impressed she sat through it as well as she did. Must be because she thought she was slowly poisoning me.

She slips out of the house, and I’m up instantly. My veins strum with the excitement of tracking her. What is she up to?

I follow her to a dark mansion. The lighting outside is dim, but cars line the driveway. I have no doubt she plans to take out her target tonight. She slips into the house, and I follow.

The crowd looks rich and posh, but they’re tough and deadly. This room alone has enough power inside it to take down America. I watch as Max Mancini, also known as the Butcher, slides up to a woman. Luna walks his way, and just as he hands the woman a drink, she swipes it as she passes. Even though the Mancinis and the Rossis plan to marry into each other’s family, there’s a delicate balance that keeps the peace within the Italian mafia.

It reminds me that Luna would have no problem having me killed. Her values and loyalty will always be to her family. It’s another reminder that I’m an outsider in her world. Looking back, maybe I never was in the circle of trust with her.

I get a few side-eyed glances. I don’t make it a habit to socialize in crowds like this. I prefer my own company. It makes me wonder how the hell I will be able to handle having Luna around all the time. Maybe I should have held off before talking to her brother. Forever is a long fucking time… unless she ends up killing me when she finds out the truth.

I stop and look around for her. She was in front of me, then disappeared. My pulse rockets. My heart has never worked so hard in its life. I’d almost forgotten what it’s like to give a fuck.

“Fin O’Conner.” A hand claps my shoulder.

I turn and forcefully remove the hand.

“It’s odd that the same night I hear a rumor of my name on the chopping block, both you and Luna Rossi show up to a party neither of you normally attend.”
