“I don’t know what you’re thinking, but you have the wrong idea.”

“No, I don’t. It would eliminate all loose links if you killed off Fin. After all, you are the reason why he has no family.” My mouth opens, not knowing what to say. “I was friends with his sister. I was her last phone call before her dad took her out.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I repeat and try to walk away, but he grabs my wrists.

“I know it was your information that made her call her uncle. You did the right thing. It just backfired on you.”

No matter how hard I try to stop my body from trembling, it refuses to listen.

“Fin, looks just like his father. Whether he realizes it or not, he’s following in his footsteps. Sooner or later, someone is going to have to take him out.”

“Why are you talking to me?”

“I might be the low guy no one knows right now, but one day, I will have an empire. I want you to remember I helped you.”

He lets go of my wrists. And I continue on my way. But his words keep ringing in my head. He knows I leaked the information. My normally still hands are shaky. Paranoia plunges its way into my veins, and I continue to look over my shoulder. My secrets won’t stay buried forever. A little digging and my truth could be found.

I head up the back stairs that lead to the small area above the gym. The same area that leads to the rooftop. I wait silently until Fin and Kylie’s names are called for prom king and queen.

I bring my hand up, removing the gun from under my dress. My hands shake worse than the vibrations of an earthquake.

But I can’t do it. I can’t kill him.

I squeeze off a bullet, and it has his crown flying off his head, and then everyone screams as chaos erupts in the room.

Chapter 16

Fin

Lunaisactinglikea kid on as sugar high. Her whole body vibrates with excitement for our night’s excursion. We step out of my building, and I swear the same black cat from before is sitting at my door. Luna bends down, pulling a cat treat from out of nowhere.

“Don’t feed stray cats. They’ll just keep coming around,” I scold, tired of this cat following me everywhere we end up staying.

“Look at this lush coat. Does she look like a stray?” I stop and take a better look at the feline. She does look well cared for. “She’s mine. Her name is Fanny, because she was an asshole when I first found her.” She laughs.

“You couldn’t come up with a better name?”

“What happened to you? You used to be fun and have a sense of humor. It’s kind of funny. An ass can be called a fanny and she was an asshole. Get it?”

I give her a look clearly telling her it’s just not that funny or creative. “Why is she out here?” I look around.

“She follows me everywhere. See here?” She shows me her collar. “I have a beacon on her, so I know where she is if she gets lost.”

“Let me get this right. You have an outside cat that follows you wherever you go.”

She looks proud of herself, and it’s adorable. “Sure do.”

“She would be safer inside.”

She pretends to cover the cat’s ears. “You can’t cage a cat who wants to roam. She’s not meant to be indoors.” The cat looks like she’s dying to be an indoor cat, but Luna is pushing her beliefs onto the animal. “I suppose you’d want me to declaw her too?”

I grunt, not touching this conversation any more than I have to. My leg swings over the motorcycle, and I nod for her to get on behind me.

My motorcycle stops in the shadows at the same looming mansion that Luna was drugged at. Luna untangles her arms from around my torso, and immediately I miss her close presence.

“Why here?” she asks.

My brows wiggle. “This is where Ron plans to sell his next shipment. There’s a fight happening in two days.”
