“The Russian, Demetri Sokolov.”

My heart constricts, thinking of Fin. My mind flashes to me trying to pull the trigger at the prom, and purposely missing.

“Just picture his father when you shoot. You have a month left on your contract on me. When I’m left living and Fin is dead, I’ll revoke the contract, and you can go on your way.”

It takes my mind a second to register his words. “Revoke the contract?”

He gives me a wolfish grin. “I knew it would pull you out of your no-killing thing.”

It knocks the wind out of me. The contract was a setup. He set up his own damn contract to lure me out. My eyes close.

“Think about it. This is going to hurt, but I promise you’ll live.”

I hear the click of a gun’s safety. Opening my eyes, I see Fin reenter the room. His eyes blaze like an inferno of pure evil as he sees Ron holding me. A gun fires.

The burning pain radiates from my arm and right to my heart when I think about my choices in life.

Ron turns his back on me and fires at Fin. The men take turns ducking and shooting before Ron runs through one of the secret doors. It just opens and swallows him whole. Fin jumps forward before the door closes. His hand stops the movement, and he fires one last time.

It leaves only him and me in the room. Knowing Ron’s gone, I’m finally able to push down my emotions, and all I can see is Fin’s back. He should run after Ron, but deep inside, I know he won’t leave me.

Fin

WhenIseeRonholding Luna against her will, my rage ignites my entire body. I don’t even think when I pull the trigger. I hit him three times in the back, and he keeps moving because of his bulletproof vest. I would have loved to aim for his head, but he was too close to Luna. I’ve never hesitated on a kill shot until now.

Luna is frozen in the same spot she was in. I take my eyes off the target and look back at her. Twice now, in less than five minutes, I’ve hesitated. Instead of finishing Ron off like I should, I go against what my mind is telling me and return to Luna.

“Luna?” I ask, assessing her. She’s been shot in the arm, and I pull my shirt off and wrap it around the wound. Her vacant eyes land on me, looking lost. Fuck, she’s in shock. “I’m going to fix this.”

Her eyes dart to my face, then to my hands. I watch as she winces in pain when I knot the shirt around her arm.

For the second time in my life, I see unshed tears in her eyes. She must hate this moment. Luna despises being seen as weak. The thing is, she is the bravest person I know. My hands frame her face, wishing for her to give me hell for trying to help her.

I can’t help myself. I lean in and kiss her pouty lips. They’re soft against mine. I was planning a short kiss, but her good arm pulls me in closer. Her tongue probes between my lips, and I take everything she’s willing to give me. Just maybe she won’t freak out when I tell her we’re to be married in less than a month.

The clock is ticking. Her family is breathing down my neck to officially announce our engagement.

My hands slide down her body and round her perfect globes before picking her up, and I walk us out of the building.

“I can walk, Fin.” Her voice is quiet.

My lips twitch. “I know, but I like holding you in my arms.”

Chapter 17

Luna

Painshootsupmyarm as Fin grasps the bullet lodged in my arm. His hold is firm, and he breathes heavily through his nose as he concentrates. There’s an awkward silence between us. His brows are furrowed, and his facial features are hard, making it seem like he’s about to lose his mind.

The metal bullet clatters onto the small metal plate.

“Me getting shot isn’t your fault,” I murmur once the echo disappears and has the silence sounding louder.

“I had him in my grasp, and I let him go.”

He wraps medical tape tight around my arm. I try not to show the pain that slices through with the pressure, but his eyes lift to mine, and his grip becomes softer.

“We both know you like a challenge. This makes it more exciting,” I remark, trying to find the positive.
