Fin is looking wide-eyed and shakes his head. My breathing is quickening. Each gasp is harder than the last one.

We failed and would have been killed if it wasn’t for fate. I never want this feeling again.

Fin guides my head down. “Take slow, deep breaths.”

I’m trying, but he’s so close. The vibrations of his lips are on my neck. He takes my palm, and his fingers circle designs on it. Between doodles, his thumb and finger press down on what I’m assuming are pressure points.

My breaths even out, and he kisses my pulse before giving me his perfect smile.

Present

“Wanttogokillsomeone together?” Fin’s deep, rumbly voice asks. “I’ll even let you shoot first.”

“Remember how you missed when you took me for the first time?”

His hand stops circling the middle of my back. “Confession. I stole that contract from my father. It was never given to me. I guess it was a good thing he did the job right.”

There’s silence between us. His feet shuffle on the ground. I straighten and look at him. The confession shocks me.

“I had also never killed anyone before that,” he continues. I can feel my mouth drop open. “I just wanted to impress you.” His lips curve into a soft smirk, and it has my heart fluttering.

I smile back at him. “You used to be a horrible shot, huh? First, you missed the guy we weren’t supposed to kill, then shot me with an arrow. What was the other miss you had?”

“What miss?”

“They come in threes, right?”

He pulls me into him. He’s warm and smells like perfection. Each second he holds me, my stress reduces. Each of my muscles relaxes, my head clearing.

“You. I missed my chance.” He takes my wrist and places a kiss on top of my pulse. “Want to talk about what just happened in there?”

With a snort, I say, “I’d rather kill someone.”

He lifts one brow, not allowing me to sidestep this conversation.

Sighing, I tell him, “It happens when I’m unable to see how I can control a situation. What can I say? I’m a control freak.”

Chapter 19

Luna

AllIcanthinkabout is having to pick a fight with Fin. He’s being too kind. Too attentive. Too perfect. And I have to kill him.

“What’s with the frown?” His fingers brush over the creases in my forehead.

I try to shake off the thoughts.

“Just trying to figure out where Ron would have disappeared to,” I lie. “Let’s go to the gym. It helps me think.” Another lie. I need to burn off some of the tension building in me.

“You sure you’re okay?” he asks once again.

I nod.

“We’re in this together.” His words seem to hold an edge, with another meaning.

I place my hand on his. It’s natural and feels right. Then I remember I’m going to have to betray him—to save my sister and to keep my secret. I take my hand off his and stand.
