“I already have the big details planned out,” my mother gushes, walking over to pick up a binder that is labeledFin and Luna’s Wedding. “It’s only a month out, but if you don’t like any of the details, I’m sure we can change a few things. I wasn’t sure how much planning you wanted to be part of.”

My mother continues talking a mile a minute. Everyone is talking like they knew this was a thing for months.Months.

“Why is a wedding planned, when I was never asked?” My voice is low and calm, even though I feel jittery as hell.

“Luna, don’t be like that. You two are a good match. Your brother and I came to this conclusion when Fin came to us for your hand,” my father says proudly.

“Body language doesn’t lie. I saw it with my own eyes tonight,” my brother adds, looking a little sheepish. He knows my view on marriage.

“You sold me to Fin?” I clarify, my rage building in me by the second.

“You’re not a piece of meat. I didn’t buy you,” Fin announces.

The men at the table nod like he’s preaching the truth.

“What was exchanged?” I ask, my voice rising.

“He saved Gia’s and my life,” my brother states.

“Was that before or after he asked for an arranged marriage?” I look from my brother to Fin. Fin is known to make situations work for himself. He only looks out for number one.

“I agreed… the second time he brought it up,” my brother confesses.

“You were never my bodyguard,” I say out loud, realizing the truth. The whole thing was a setup. Fin shakes his head. “You talk about trust and betrayal. This is a blow to the heart, Fin. You couldn’t even trust me withyourtruth.”

I stand and take a good look around the table. Confusion mars their faces. A sarcastic laugh escapes, and I march straight out of the house.

My heart feels like Fin is holding it in a vise. I was stupid to think he understood me. He’s like every other person in my world. They try to constrain me, wanting to push me behind them. My heart was opening up to him in ways it had never opened before.

Tears prickle in my eyes. I could take a sledgehammer to the ribs easier than this. My hand wipes at my right eye, not wanting anyone to see me like this. I walk behind the large house toward my mother’s garden, which has tall hedges, giving privacy to anyone past its walls.

I don’t even have my own ride to leave the property. My family sold me, something they said they would never do. Fin forced their hand, because that’s who Fin is. He will do anything to get what he desires. He has no idea I’m not the woman he thinks he wants. A pitiful chuckle is pushed from my throat.

“Luna!” Fin’s deep voice roars toward me.

Arms crossed, I wait for him to reach me. My breathing is hard. The tips of my fingers tingle with the rage inside me.

His powerful legs stride him to me within seconds. “You can’t run from this,” he growls. His heavily veined forearms stretch his cuffed dress shirt, the material looking like it may rip.

My eyes hold his with defiance. His masculine scent washes over me with the wind. Like him, it’s powerful and demanding. My heart leaps, recognizing his nearness. It’s another twist of the knife. He had me caring. I was scared of Ron spilling my secrets, but not now.

“You need to go find a nice, timid virgin,” I say, and a sniffle follows that I can’t stop.

His jaw strains, grinding back and forth.

“I’m damaged goods. And let’s be honest—you want someone you can dominate. I will never be that girl.”

“I want you, Luna. I don’t want to break in a virgin. I love everything about you.”

“You sure? Because I know your father loved breaking in virgins. That’s what he called it, like you just did.”

“I’m nothing like my father.” His hands curl, making fists.

“Well, you both enjoyed fucking me.”

His head rears back like I’ve slapped him. I’ve been holding this guilt in for years. I never told a soul. I tried to get my revenge, but it backfired on me horribly.

“Want to know who should be blamed for your sister’s death? Me.” I said it—the words I have thought every single day. “I’m the one who framed your father for being a rat and told your sister about it.” I wanted him and his sister to run so they wouldn’t get in trouble. I never expected their father would kill one of his children. “I ruined your family, Fin.”
