“Why were you meeting with Siya?” I ask when I’m standing back with him.

“It’s strange you ask me that. I’ve never met the guy before, but he shows up on my doorstep saying we have a diamond meeting.”

“I didn’t realize you were interested in that type of venture.”

“I’ll leave that for you, Demetri. I’m not looking to cause a war with one of my sisters’ husbands. I have enough enemies. I don’t need to worry about family now too.”

“What happened after you told him you weren’t interested?”

“Nothing. He left.”

“Ever think maybe it was the Irish trying to set you up, or the other Italian family?” Both families have tried to fuck me over before. It’s stupid of Luca to think he’s immune to business just because his sisters are married to and fucking them. It wouldn’t hold me back.

“What are you looking for?” he asks.

“I don’t know what you mean.” I play dumb.

“Why did you agree to come today? What do you need?”

“I thought everyone wanted to see Katrina.”

“That may be true. But you think Katrina deserves better than us, yet here we are. What changed?”

A shriek so loud it could pierce ears echoes around the yard. I look up to see Sophia crying and screaming, while Katrina is arguing with her.

Neither her brother nor I hesitate and hurry to the girls. “I found Katrina with this. She was about to use it before I stole it away.”

“Fuck you. It’s a lie.” Katrina is red in the face. I can see scratch marks up and down her arm.

I grip her hand, my other hand running down her now puffing skin to make sure there’s no track mark. None, only ugly red marks from fingernails.

“What is wrong with you?” I hiss at her.

“I’m not the fucked-up one here, Demetri. You are.” She looks around, and her entire family is standing watching with looks of disappointment.

“This is what I do. I ruin everything good I have. I disappoint everyone!” she yells, looking at her family.

My cousin rounds the corner. Late, but I’m happy he’s here. I drag Katrina toward him, and he doesn’t ask any questions as I push her into his grip. “Take her home,” I demand.

I turn and begin looking for Charlotte, then Katrina’s mother for Capree.

“Seems like you’re as bad as we are.”

My hands fist, my knuckles turning white from the smug look on Luca’s face.

“Mrs. Rossi, can you please take the girls inside? I don’t want them to watch any of this.” She nods. When I don’t see them outside anymore, I step up to him. “What was Katrina doing at her gallery before it went up in flames?”

His lips twist. He knows.

“I was showing her how to smuggle diamonds into her gallery,” he finally concedes.

I knew they were conspiring behind my back.

“The diamonds in the picture that was sent to my house?”

“I sent them to show her how easily it could be done. I was expecting a phone call when she realized. She had no idea I was the one who did it.”

I pull my gun. The domino effect of the safeties being released echoes behind me. I’m really tired of being one against everyone.
