“It wasn’t to go against you. She wanted to help you.”

“Did you kill Eva?” My heart pounds so hard it feels like it will rip from my chest.

“Eva? Your old nanny?” His forehead creases with a frown and confusion ripples through his tone.

“Did you kill her?” My face is turning hot, and my finger desperately wants to move.

“No. I don’t even know what she looks like. Why would I kill her?”

My hand swipes down my face, and that moment of lapsed judgement has Luca moving to place his gun against my chest. Either way, we both die if a trigger is pressed.

“I will not be cleaning blood off the grass of my own backyard. You boys need to figure out a way to resolve whatever issue you are fighting about by other means,” Mrs. Rossi scolds.

“Where are the girls?” I ask with alarm.

She places her hands on her hips. “Sophia offered to take them home. It’s better than them listening to guns going off.”

I drop my pistol and pull out my phone. Two more guns press against my skin. “Let’s go back to fighting after this call,” I say and quickly call Mikhail to tell him to watch for Sophia. He should have enough time to put Katrina in a room to not scare the girls if she’s still in her volatile mood.

No answer. I redial. Nothing. My eyes dart around. Every gun is still trained on me. Something is very wrong, especially since my cousin is the type to answer the phone mid-fuck.

I glance at Luca, and he lowers his gun. It’s still pointed at me but no longer touching my skin. There’s uncertainty in his eyes, and the space between them creases with the first sign of worry. An unpleasant tingle forms and works up my spine, making my entire body stiffen.

“Call Sophia. Tell her to bring the girls back.”

Mrs. Rossi startles at my harsh command, and her eyes grow wide as she pats her legs. “I never saw a reason to carry a cell phone before.”

Calmly—more calmly than I feel—Luca passes his phone to his mother. “Make the call.”

My senses are on high alert, and now everyone else’s are too. Mrs. Rossi lowers the phone, her eyes looking tired and as if she aged rapidly in the last five minutes. “She didn’t answer. It went right to voicemail.”

My throat tightens, and my body erupts with a cold sweat, annoyingly so. “I need to go.”

“I’m coming with you.” Luca leaves no room to argue, and I’m too furious to care. My vision has become like a tunnel. Every explanation runs through my mind. Sophia and my wife fake-arguing in order to get her away from me. Katrina somehow overpowering my cousin. Them doing it all to kidnap the girls. Or maybe I’m completely wrong and both cars were gunned down by rivals. Either way, I’ve been betrayed.

My knuckles are white as I grip the steering wheel. Not a word is said as I stomp the gas pedal and my tires squeal as I get us the fuck out of here.

I call Katrina’s phone, then my cousin’s. Nothing. Luca curses beside me, and all I can think about is how I’ve failed to protect everyone once again.

Chapter 34: Katrina

“Thisisn’tthewayto the house.” My thumb points over my shoulder to where we should be going. Instead of going into the city, we’re going away from it. The houses gain more distance between them, trees and grass take over from the concrete landscape.

“Boss doesn’t want you at the house.”

I swallow down the emotions that want to rip through me, saying calmly, “Sophia was lying.” I would never touch another drug in my life. I have too many people that need and count on me now. I would never jeopardize Capree like that.

“Why would she lie? I thought you were best friends.”

I raise a brow. “And why would you think that?” I study Demetri’s cousin’s face. I’ve seen him in passing, but that’s it. Before I hid away during my pregnancy, I made sure to know everything about Demetri.

Mikhail shrugs. “Demetri said it once.”

“So, where are we going?”

“I don’t want to ruin the surprise. You’ll have to wait.”

“What surprise?” He ignores my question, focusing on the road ahead.
