“There’s a swing to the right, so you can put Capree down.” I point, wanting Katrina to see all the baby stuff I have.

She’s silent, and it drives me crazy. I keep waiting for any type of input. Maybe I didn’t do it right.

“What’s with the pool noodles on the counter corners?” she finally asks.

“They were sharp, so I thought those would fix them. The ones specifically made for table edges weren’t thick enough for my liking.”

She makes ammmsound while she keeps looking around. “You have four baby gates on the stairs?”

“In case they get past the first one, or if they fall… it would hurt less if they slid a shorter distance.”

“Everycupboard has a lock on it. Not just the bottom ones.”

“Charlotte knows how to climb. I wanted to make sure it’sallsafe.” I’m pretty proud of what I accomplished.

“Do you think you went a tad overboard?” A light giggle escapes her, and it does something strange to my heart. I would do anything to keep that relaxed smile on her face.

“Not at all. I have a few things to add, but it’s basically complete.”

She walks to me.Progress. I resist touching her, when that’s all I want to do. “You did a great job, Demetri.” She places a soft kiss on my cheek, and I can’t help myself. I pull her in by her waist and kiss her how I’ve been dreaming of. She kisses me back, and I want to raise my fist in a “fuck yeah!” but keep my hands on her while I can.

When she pulls away, we’re both breathless.

“Move in with me,” I ask, in my own way at least.

“Demetri, that’s not a good idea.”

That’s her mind talking again. I nod like I understand, but the only thing it does is make sure I up the ante. Katrina will love me once again. I will make that my dying wish if I have to.

Katrina

“Youhavemail.”Maxhands me an envelope as I walk outside to water my plants. The flowers are yellow and drooping. I think I’m watering them too much.

I open the envelope, and I gasp as I look at the picture inside. It falls to the ground as I cover my mouth, and Max bends down to pick it up.

“This looks angry,” he comments as he turns the picture around, looking at it from different angles.

“There’s writing on the back,” I point out, wondering why the hell Demetri is sending me a picture of a dead guy.

“It says this is the guy who sold the drugs to Sophia when you overdosed. So muchangerin this kill.”

“You’re one to talk. Your nickname is the Butcher.”

“That’s because I have precision, talent, and patience. I’m like da Vinci, while this here is like a two-year-old coloring a picture.”

“Why would he send me this?”

“Why don’t you ask him? He’s walking over here as we speak.”

My attention goes to the road, and sure enough, Demetri is strolling toward us like this is his neighborhood.

I grab the picture from Max’s hand and hurry to meet Demetri away from the house. I don’t want Charlotte to hear us. “I don’t know why you’re sending me this, but don’t do it again.”

“I wanted to show you that I took care of him. He hurt you, and I hurt him. You’ll be getting more of those from me.”

“Demetri, you can’t do this.”

“Everyone needs to know they can’t hurt you.”
