I blow out a breath. He doesn’t seem to be getting it.

“Nothing used to make you want me more than when you saw my carnage,” he says, confused. “I thought it would make you happy.”

“No, it doesn’t.” I cross my arms over my chest.

“Then I’ll fake our deaths, and we can go live a regular life like you want.”

I tilt my head to the side, the suggestion feeling wrong. “I’m not faking my death.”

“Okay, well we can still go live a regular life if I just fakemydeath. Then you can have your wish of a regular life,” he replies, undeterred.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because I love you, Katrina. I’m willing to show you with actions that I’m sincere.”

My fingers rub up and down between my eyes. “I’m not looking for a regular life. I realized even before all the chaos that I’ve always just been searching for a place where I felt like I belong.”

“You belong with me,” he argues.

“This is the first time in my life I have my shit together. I’m happy and thriving. And also for the first time, I don’t belong to someone or something. I have my own identity, and honestly, I’m loving it.” Disappointment lines his features. If I stay on this topic, I’ll end up crying. “Are you still okay to take both girls over night?”

“Oh yeah. I have a big night planned at home.”

HandingCapreeofftoDemetri has my heart pumping double time.I have to get used to this. This will happen frequently. My heart is happy that he is taking them and wants to be a good father and in their life.

I stay outside, watching the car disappear out of sight. Now what do I do with myself?

I walk around my condo. There’s nothing to clean, so I sit down to watch TV, but I can’t focus on any show. Even my phone can’t keep me occupied. I keep checking my messages, expecting Demetri to text or call because he can’t handle the situation.

I’ll just call him to see if he’s okay.

The phone rings, but he doesn’t pick up.

I’ll send him a text.

My fingers tap out,Is everything going okay?

I watch the clock on my phone go up by a minute at a time. An hour passes, and nothing.

My foot taps the floor.

I’ll drive by and just make sure the building isn’t on fire.

The building looks fine when I get there.

I’ll just go inside to make sure it’s all good.

My fingers tap on my steering wheel before I step out. Without stopping, I hurry into the elevator and press in the code he gave me the day he showed it to me. It takes a second before the doors close, and it starts to move up.

It’s not until I’m trapped inside that I realize how strange it is not to see any security around. Maybe he gave them the night off. I place my ear to the elevator door, and not surprisingly, I’m met with silence.

It startles me when it suddenly opens, and I jump back, seeing Demetri standing just outside it. The room is dim, and there looks to be candles around. His cologne wraps around me instantly. He’s in jeans and a dress shirt, a different outfit he picked the girls up in.

Does he have a woman over with our kids here?

Jealousy claws at me. It shouldn’t. But it’s way too early to be introducing the girls to someone new.

“You look mad.” He smiles while stepping to the side to allow my entrance. I step out of the elevator, trying to see if I can spot her.
