Why did that feel like he had slapped her in the face? Chantelle mentally counted to ten.

“Did you just say you married me because you know that I will always be at home after you’ve been cheating on me?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You pretty much did.”

Wade reached for her hand.

“I love you, Chantelle, and I never cheated on you. Why can’t you see that?”

Chantelle pulled her hand away. He was not going to listen, nor was he going to grant his signature on the papers. She looked at Mr Paulson.

“I suppose this means we’ll be taking this to court.”

“Good.” Her lawyer’s eyes glinted. “I’m looking forward to this.”

Chantelle wasn’t. She had hoped they could handle this with no hassle, but Wade was doubling down. She turned back to Wade.

“Fine. We’re going to court. There, I will be giving the judge all the evidence I was given of you cheating, and of how you’ve been harassing me since I left. I’m sure they’re going to love the voicemails where you’ve threatened me with physical bodily harm for getting a mind of my own and leaving you.”

Wade’s face went white. He spluttered.

“I...I never did that! I wouldn’t say anything like that to you.”

“Oh, you would. And I have the proof.” Chantelle brought out her cell phone and started to look for the voicemail. “We can listen to it on loudspeaker. I normally crank the volume up because, you know, I want to be sure I get everything correct.”

“No!” Wade gripped her wrist, his eyes panicked. “Don’t you fucking play that!”

“Let go of me and I won’t.”

They glared at each other, Wade looking a little more panicked. Slowly, he released her and sat back in his chair. Chantelle lowered her phone.

“Sign the papers, let me get the rest of my stuff, and never contact me again, and I won’t be revealing these voicemails to anyone. I know there are people around here, especially your female boss, who will not take kindly to someone threatening violence on a woman. That is something that will make sure you lose your job.”

“You’re blackmailing me into this?”

“Why not? You’ve been threatening me. I think I’m allowed to play somewhat dirty in return.” Chantelle picked up her bag and dropped her phone into it. “Do as I want, and nobody needs to know what you are. Refuse, or contact me in any way, and I will be making sure everyone knows what sort of person you really are. I know you love to have people think you’re amazing. The ladies certainly won’t think that when they hear what you’ve said to me.”

It had been almost laughable when Wade started threatening her. He had to be going mad if he thought threatening her was going to make Chantelle come back to him. Wade was losing control of her, and it was showing.

If only she had left him after the first time he cheated, and then she might have moved on with her life sooner with someone else.

Or several people.

“I think I’ve had my say, and thank you for hearing me out.” Chantelle stood up. “Mr Paulson will get the signature from you now. And he’s got a copy of the threats as well, which he had permission to distribute as he sees fit.”

“You really are blackmailing me.”

“After what you’ve sent to me, I think it’s only fair.”

Wade sneered at her.

“You’re not going to find anyone who loves you like I do, Chantelle. You won’t get better than me.”

Chantelle almost burst out laughing at that. She leaned over and gave him a sweet smile.

“You’re wrong. I can get better. And I already have.” She straightened up. “Have a happy life, Wade. I know I will now you’re not in it.”
