“Fuck, I think it lulled us into a false sense of security with that brief respite. It’s getting worse.” He shook his head. “We’re all going to need to dry off before we can look at the car properly. Cedric’s not keen on electrocuting himself.”

“That’s fair enough.” Chantelle stepped away from Darren, her heart racing. “Would you mind if I borrowed some clothes? And I would like a shower at some point.”

“You can use the en-suite in my room.” Cedric said. “And I’m sure I’ve got some old things you can use.”

This was all innocent. They were friends, after all. So why did that offer sound so erotic? She must have been out in the rain for too long; her brain was soggy.

Clutching the towel to her, she managed a smile.

“Thanks. I do appreciate it.”

Cedric tried not tofall up the stairs, aware that Chantelle was following close behind. He needed to stop behaving like an idiot around her. Every time Chantelle looked at him, he wanted to pounce on her.

Being her friend had been agony when his lust for her kept threatening to go out of control. Chantelle was just one of those people you could easily fall for. Beautiful, intelligent, funny with a gorgeous smile, a laugh that he felt all through his body, and legs that seemed to go on for miles.

Legs that he had dreamed about wrapping around his waist since she came into the student bar. She was just one of those women who seemed to be perfect.

Wade had had her for three years, one year all to himself when he took her across the country. And he had thrown it away.

If I had Chantelle as mine, I would be treating her like a queen.

They reached his bedroom, and Cedric took a quick look inside. He couldn’t remember if he had cleared the clothes off the floor. Thankfully, the floor was clear, and the bed was actually made. It looked like an adult lived here and not a slob.

“Here you are.” Cedric led the way into the room, trying not to look at Chantelle as she moved to stand near the bed. “The bathroom is behind you. I can get you some fresh towels, if you wish.”

“I’m sure the ones in there are fine.” Chantelle gave him a smile. “Thanks, anyway.”

Cedric shoved his hands into his pockets. Damn, more than a year not seeing her and the lust was flaring more than he expected.

He wanted her. Badly.

She’s just been caught out in the rain and she’s dealing with a divorce. She’s not here to get fucked.

Not when I know Darren and Matt want to fuck her themselves.

Cedric had seen how close Darren had been to kissing Chantelle when he and Matt came in. He wasn’t sure if he was comfortable with seeing that. It made Cedric want to stake his claim now.

What was it about this woman that did them all up in knots?

“Cedric?” Chantelle’s smile was fading a little. “Are you okay? You look a little...off.”

“Oh. It’s nothing.” Cedric managed a smile even as he felt his arousal flood through his stomach. “I guess I’m still trying to believe that you’re really here. We never did get a goodbye.”

Chantelle’s cheeks went red. She looked away.

“Wade was...he wouldn’t allow it. I really wanted to, but somehow he convinced me that it was for the best that we had a clean start.”

“You actually went along with it?”

“I loved him. I thought he loved me.” Chantelle scowled. “Now I know he just loved having control. He didn’t really love me, or he wouldn’t have treated me like that.”

“He didn’t...you know...”

“What? No, he never hit me. He just slept around.” Chantelle wrapped her arms around her middle. “God, I can’t believe I didn’t see it. I thought I would never be taken in like that.”

The knowledge Wade had never hit her eased the anger in Cedric’s chest a little bit, but not much. Darren had caught the guy cheating, but Chantelle had refused to believe him. She was in too deep with Wade, and Cedric had worried that the guy would do something to hurt her.
