“Are you kidding me? Seriously, Nathan?”
“What? Nobody caught us.”
“And what makes you think I won’t say anything about it?”
Nathan chuckled.
“I doubt it.”
Darren grunted. Jake nudged Nathan.
“Stop it. Not now.”
“Okay, fine.” Nathan shoved the key in his pocket. “Have you thought about what I said earlier, Darren?”
“You mean...”
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Darren swallowed.
“I’ve thought about it. Nice way to stop me from doing my work.”
“Well, you’re not doing anything about it, and we don’t want to tread on your toes by getting there first. It seems the most logical solution.”
“I said I could handle one night sharing her. But on a more long-term basis?” Darren adjusted his hold on his backpack. “I don’t know if I can do that.”
“It’s not that difficult.” Nathan gestured at Jake. “We’ve been doing it for years, and falling into a good medium is easier than you think.”
“You might be used to that lifestyle, Nathan, but I’m not. The thought of not having Marigold’s complete attention...” Darren shook his head. “I’m not sure if I can do it.”
“Then why don’t you fucking ask her out for real?” Jake demanded. “You’re fucking around and giving her a wide berth, which is just making things worse.”
“You think I don’t want to ask her? She said she wanted to stay single, and I’m respecting that.”
Jake snorted.
“You just don’t want to be rejected. That’s your problem.”
Darren didn’t immediately respond, but his hesitation was enough. Nathan rolled his eyes.
“God, all three of us are pathetic. We know what we want, but we’re too fucking scared to do anything about it. All over a damn woman.”
Jake jostled his arm.
“Maybe you shouldn’t have suggested one night, then. It was your idea, after all.”
“What? You agreed with me. And it’s not my fault this happened!” Nathan scowled. “I didn’t know this was going to happen. We’ve had one-night stands with other women before.”
“But they weren’t Marigold Soaper.” Jake shook his head. “We all screwed up, and then we forgot where our balls were because we were too scared of upsetting everyone else involved.”
He was right. Nathan wished he wasn’t. He turned to Darren.
“Look, we all want the same thing. And none of us are going to back down for anyone else. We’re mates, aren’t we?”
“I’d like to think we are.”
“And we worked well when it came to being in bed with Marigold, didn’t we?”
