That wasn’t the only thing he could sense, either…

Cinder was waiting for him upstairs, along with her familiar. It made Micah uneasy to be apart from her for long. Finally claiming his mate had gone a long way to soothing his soul, especially after how she initiated it, but four decades of a sliced bond carving away at his heart wouldn’t disappear overnight.

He’d only left the room they now shared because Raze had called him down to the third floor as soon as he landed back in the City of Sin. If his eldest brother could forgo seeing his mate after such a long break to have this meeting, he could bear being apart from Cinder for a few minutes more.

Especially when Raze said, “After all this time, we finally have our key. So that begs the question… what do we do now?”

Normally, Raze didn’t ask questions, not even of his brothers. He made decisions, Sam scoffed, and Micah went along with it because he always did. But that was business.

The key… that was something else entirely.

Micah knew what Raze was asking, too. For thousands of years, the former Seraph’s only goal was to get back to Heaven. Sam only wanted to be known for being someone other than an angel of death.

And Micah? He wanted whatever his brothers wanted.

Of course, now he had a mate to think about. Cinder would always come first to him, but she was his soulmate. Wherever she was, that was where he’d be, and vice versa. When the possibility of returning to Heaven actually became real to him, he’d asked her about it.

He’d adored her answer.

“I go where you go.” She’d grabbed his hand, giving it a squeeze. “Besides, I spent sixty years on Earth. Forty years in Hell. I might like to see what Heaven’s about.”

If that was a good enough response for Cinder, it was good enough for him. “I go where you two go. I always have.”

And, with Cinder alongside him, he always would.

Raze nodded at Micah, then turned to Sam. “What about you?”

Sam shrugged, his feathers ruffling with the motion. “I’m good staying in Purgatory a little longer. Polly likes it, the casino is a goldmine, and I’d really rather not have to take up the flaming sword again if we head back to the celestial cities.”

When Raze nodded at Sam next, Micah figured Raze was expecting that answer.

His biggest surprise, though?

Was what Raze said next.

“I agree.”

Sam nearly choked. Micah just stared.

Raze scowled. “What?”

Micah pursed his lips while Sam’s dark eyes went wide.

“What?” he echoed. “Are you kidding me, Raze? For three thousand years, all you’ve wanted was to get back into Heaven, and you’re not jumping at the chance? Excuse us for wondering if you left your brain back in London or something.”

Raze flipped both of his brothers his middle finger.

“No, thanks,” quipped Sam. “Got a mate for that.”

Before Raze could come up with another retort, Micah decided to cut in. If he didn’t, the two of them could go at it for hours, and maybe they didn’t mind being away from their mates, but Micah had only just made Cinder his.

“So. It’s decided then. For now, we stay here with our mates. Right?”

Raze pursed his lips, but then he nodded. Sam sat up in his seat and clapped.

Micah smiled. “Well, if that’s settled, I’m going to be going back upstairs and—”

“Not so fast, Micah.” Raze rose up from his desk, the tone in his voice keeping Micah from doing the same. “I’ve got something for you. Here.”
