CHAPTER6

Though the building opposite of Polly’s had the best vantage point to watch his soulmate, sometimes Sam took to roosting on her rooftop instead. As much as he wished he could be inside of her apartment with her, he knew he couldn’t—not yet, and maybe not ever—but at least he felt much closer to her without the street stretching between them.

Three hours had passed since Polly snuck out of House of Sin. Sam, still unsure what it was that kept her from waiting for him to finish his call, had thought about explaining his current predicament to his brothers before changing his mind. Raze would only scoff and say that it was fated, that Polly would come around in the end—the same way Becca did for him—while Micah would sit there, living proof that fated matings didn’t always end happily.

No, thanks.

When their meeting ended, all three princes in agreement about their next step when it came to breaking Lucifer’s curse, Sam almost returned to this room in the hotel. Though he’d had the same one for decades, it had always seemed more like a rented space than home to Sam, mainly because he was rarely there. An immortal angel who slept only when he felt like it, without a lover, he didn’t really see a reason to laze around in bed. He’d rather take a refreshing flight, searching out a soul to save; before Polly, the rush of doing good deeds was the only thing that made the dark mantle of Death lighten up. Now, returning to the empty room, knowing that his soulmate was as far out of his reach as ever… yeah. No surprise when he found himself launching into the sky, flying toward the outskirts of Sin City.

Folding his wings behind him, Sam perched on the top of her building, wondering why the hell she left him. Because his soulmate was such an uncontrollable free spirit, it shouldn’t have been such a surprise that she disregarded his pleas for her to stay and wait for him. Why should she?

But then he remembered the pang of disappointment and hurt he felt coming from her as the phone rang and he knew she had her reasons—and he wouldn’t like them.

She’d left him. No getting around that. Polly had tracked him down to the casino, summoning him, giving him the perfect chance to tell her the truth of what she was to him, and he’d been so thrown by her casual confession—I’m an atheist—that he never got the chance before Raze was interrupting him.

And then she’d left.

She was home now. Following the whisper of a thread that stretched between them, Sam flew straight to her apartment, feeling a little more settled that she was tucked inside the safety of her home. Even if he was forever relegated to watching her from the outside, he was at peace knowing that Polly couldn’t get into too much trouble in her apartment.

For another hour, he sat there, reveling in her aura a few floors down below. He’d pulled in his wings when the wind ruffling his feathers reminded Sam just how lonely he was, and he tilted his head back, watching the stars. He froze when he sensed Polly’s aura on the move, preparing to get up and take flight if she was heading out for another late night meeting.

Only… she wasn’t heading down. So in tune with his soulmate after a month of watching over her, he could pick up on the nuances of her trail. Instead of down, she was heading up, and he couldn’t understand why until the moment the door to the rooftop eased open.

And there she was.

Polly had tamed her curls, pulling them into a bun high on her head. Her expression was cool, her body covered in an oversized hoodie and a pair of sweatpants that did little to disguise her curves. She’d washed off the make-up he’d been stunned to see earlier; such a natural beauty, her skilled hand had only enhanced it, leaving Sam to struggle with an erection long after she left the hotel. Even Raze had picked up on his aching cock, raising an eyebrow when a frustrated Sam eventually stormed into the office earlier that night.

The more he obsessed over how he’d upset Polly, the easier it was the tame his poor dick. One glimpse at Polly striding over to him, not even a little taken aback to find him up on her rooftop, and bam. He was hard as a fucking rock, and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it.

Easing gently to his feet, hoping she couldn’t see the bulge pushing against his pants, he offered her a quick smile.

She didn’t return it.

Uh-oh.

“What are you doing here?” Her usual smirk was missing as she crossed her arms over her impressive chest. “Maybe I should make it perfectly clear, Ace. No fooling. No teasing. We can get this straight: I like who I am. I like what I do. I’m not going to make any apologies for that, and if you think that a handsome face and those brooding eyes of yours are going to convince me to go straight, you’re fooling both of us. Save your white knight complex for a girl who needs it. ‘Kay?”

Sam’s mouth fell open. Holy shit. Is that what she really thought of him? That he was trying to change her?

Could I? Could I convince you to stop thieving…

He shuttered his eyes for a split second. Of course. Because he told her that he wanted to.

Go. He was such a fucking idiot.

“Polly—”

“Save that, too.”

He couldn’t. Not when everything was on the line. Their talisman—and his forever. “I just… that’s not what I meant. When I said…” Damn it. Why couldn’t he find the right words to explain? “You’re a good soul. The world you live in is dangerous. That’s all. I wanted to keep you safe.”

The curve of her lips had a sharp edge. “I made it this far without you, didn’t I?”

She did. And if he’d found her before the night she was fated to slip her hand in the wrong vampire’s pocket, she wouldn’t have had to.

Looking at the dare blazing in her green eyes, Sam realized something. He’d fucked up. He’d fucked up big time. Any headway he made with Polly by keeping his distance, saving her from that dark human soul with the switchblade, hearing her use his name to summon him… he’d lost it all with one careless comment.

No way he could tell her that she was his soulmate now. She’d reject him, just like he’d feared from the beginning, and there was too much at stake to risk her running again.
