Wiping a tear that escaped my eye, I turn around.

He’s walking toward me.

I stand.

Unable to move, fearful he won’t continue to make it back to me.

Where he forever belongs.

“The truth is, I’d stop if you asked me.” He cups my cheeks and lifts my head, forcing my burning eyes to look at him. “Fuck.” He brushes a tear from my eye. “I’d do anything for you. Anything.” He bends down and kisses me.

Unlike my goodbye kiss, this one is filled with passion and promise.

“Stay,” he whispers against my mouth. “Don’t go.” He presses his forehead against mine. “I’m sorry.” He pulls back and looks into my eyes. “I’m not good at this shit, but I’ll try to get better. I promise you. I’ll be whatever you need me to be. Just stay.”

“I told you I’m doing what’s best for me.” A small smile spreads over my tingling lips. “And you, Brett Daxon, is what’s best for me. And I don’t want you to be anything other than what you already are.” I smile up at him. “Because that’s the man I fell in love with.”

Epilogue

“No.” Cassie hip checks me. “I’m making dinner tonight.” She laughs as we carry the bags of groceries toward my place. “All you need to worry about is taking a shower.”

“Are you saying I stink?”

“Yes.” She nods, grinning. “But it’s a good stink.” Her nose scrunches in the most adorable way.

“Really?” I grin down at her, loving the way she looks at me and that she wants me even after a hard day’s work.

She lights up everything inside me, and it always stays on for long after.

“Hey,” Cole calls out.

I pull my eyes from hers and look at my brother. “What’s up?”

I shift the grocery bag to my other hip.

He lifts his cell with a wiggle of the wrist. “Julia call.”

“Okay. I got it.”

“Nah.” He waves. “I can take it. You two lovebirds look like you’re busy.”

“Are you sure?” I scowl. He and Lix keep taking my turn whenever Cassie’s around, which has been a lot in the past month. “You took the last one and—”

“I got it.” He taps me on the shoulder, winking at Cassie as he walks to his truck.

Cassie punches the code into the elevator and waits for me.

I shake my head and walk up to her. “So what are you making for dinner? Grilled cheese and chips again,” I say, feeling uneasy about Cole taking the call.

“Hey, I never said I was a cook.” She laughs. We enter the elevator. “Tonight, I’m making burgers on the grill.”

“You can’t cook, but you know how to grill?”

“My father was the grill master, and he taught me well.”

“Sounds great.” I lean down, kiss her, and get into the elevator with her. “I can’t wait to meet him.”

Her eyes fly to mine. “You want to meet my parents?”
