“Don’t forget your wine.” He smiles.

I grab the glass, and hand in hand, he walks me to the back of his place. He flicks on the light to his bedroom.

My eyes slide to his.

“Your bedroom?” I grin. “I thought we were going to the balcony.”

“We are.” He leans close and whispers into my ear. “But don’t worry, sweetheart. We’ll come back here, and when we do, I guarantee the gentleman you got a glimpse of will be nowhere to be found.”

He pulls the blinds back, revealing a sliding glass door along with a beautiful sight. The shimmering river and the lights from the city behind it.

He opens the door, and I head toward the breathtaking scenery. “It’s beautiful.”

In awe, I walk out—the night air brushes against my skin. I avert my eyes downward.

“This is your backyard?”

“It’s one of the reasons I purchased the lot.”

The pristine grass and two trees appear almost too perfect against the river’s shadow.

“It’s amazing.”

“Yeah,” he says, coming up to stand beside me. He places a gentle hand on my shoulder. “It could use some bushes and plants. I just haven’t had the time to do anything with it yet.”

“Yes. It could do with some color, but so could your walls.”

“My walls?”

“They’re all white. Even your bedroom.”

“Oh, listen to you. Now that you’ve been helping Lix with the painting, you’re an expert.”

“I’m just sayin’.” I grin, sipping on my wine.

I stare out at the river with the wonderful pressure of his touch on my shoulder. I turn and look up at him. “Do you think I should take the job here?”

“I think” —he takes my wineglass and sets it on the table next to the chair— “I’m done being a gentleman.”

His hand slips up the back of my neck. He gathers my hair, pulls my head back, and erases any further thoughts with an unyielding, hot, and soul-stealing kiss.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

When I pull into the parking lot, I see Cassie’s car. My stomach flutters like there’s a shit load of butterflies in it.

It amazes me how the thought of seeing her, being close to her, being able to touch her makes me tingle all over. It’s like a brain orgasm, starting in my head and traveling through the rest of my body.

I get out and head into the office, preparing for her sleek blue eyes and beautiful smile—just some of the things that light me up inside.

The tingling sensation ebbs as I glance around, disappointed.

Cole looks up at me from the desk.

“Hey.” He nods.

“Where’s Cassie?”

“Out back, planting flowers.”
